BERNE — The even numbered quarters were OK. The odd ones did South Adams in.
The Starfire girls basketball team got outscored by 16 points in the first quarter and nine in the third as it lost its season opener to the Fort Wayne Elmhurst Trojans 68-47 Friday night.
Nine different South Adams players scored in the game, but only Kindle Inniger was in double figures. She finished with 17 points, and also led the team with five steals and two assists.
Julie Muhlenkamp was next with eight points. She had 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Brooke Fox finished with six points and seven rebounds.
The Starfires, who matched Elmhurst with 20 second-quarter points and outscored the Trojans 13-9 in the fourth quarter, were hurt by 23 turnovers.
South Adams will host Eastbrook Friday at 6 p.m.
Ceremony set
South Adams high school will hold a special ceremony to recognize basketball players, cheerleaders and managers from the four former schools which now make up the South Adams district. It will be held between the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games Saturday, Nov. 27 as the Starfires take on the Bellmont Braves.
There will be a dedication of new signs to be hung in the Star Dome representing the Berne Bears, Geneva Cardinals, Jefferson Warriors and Hartford Gorillas. Anyone who was involved in the basketball programs at those schools will be admitted to the game for free.
