MONROE — November has been perfect for South Adams.

The Starfire swim teams each picked up a win over the Adams Central Jets Tuesday as both finished the month undefeated. The girls team is 4-0 after a 104-79 victory, and the boys team won its season opener 113-45.

Haleigh Lehman, Chelsea Yoder and Margaret Beymer led the girls team, which opened last season 6-0, by each winning two individual events and contributing to a pair of relay victories. The Starfires trailed 40-35 after diving, an event in which they had no competitors and gave up 13 points, but outscored Adams Central in each of the final seven events to grab the win.

Lehman took the 500-meter freestyle by more than 20 seconds in 6-minutes, 51.77 seconds. She edged Cami Vanderhart in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:19.79.

Yoder was first in the 50-meter freestyle in 41.91 and the 100-meter butterfly in 1:16.02. Beymer captured the 200-meter freestyle in 2:35.28 and the 100-meter freestyle in 1:10.51.

Lehman, Chelsea Yoder, Channing Yoder and Whitney Liechty teamed to take the 200-meter medley relay in 2:24.32, winning by less than one second. Lehman, Beymer, Talitha Maven and Ashley Gresla took the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:57.74, and Beymer, Maven, Gresla and Chelsea Yoder won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:10.24.

Senior Heath Lehman and freshman Matt Kruse teamed to pace the South Adams boys team, which easily topped the six-man Jet squad.

Lehman won the longest and shortest races of the evening, first taking the 50-meter freestyle in 27.53. He won the 500-meter freestyle in 6:42.32.

Kruse opened his high school career with a victory in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:35.96. He was also first in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:09.39.

Lehman and Kruse were also on both winning Starfire relay teams, joining Carson Sprunger and Andy Lehman for first in the 200-meter medley relay in 2:08.50. They teamed with Drew Dull and John Gresla for first in the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:27.78.

Sprunger added a victory by nearly nine seconds in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:22.73. Gresla, another freshman, won his first high school race with a time of 2:24.54 in the 200-meter freestyle.

South Adams will try to remain perfect when it visits Angola Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

FR freshmen win 1st

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s freshman girls basketball team picked up its first win Monday, holding off the Versailles Tigers 29-26.

The game was close throughout, with the Indians leading by one after the first quarter and 13-9 at halftime. Versailles outscored Fort Recovery 10-9 in the third quarter, but the Tribe held on for the three-point win.

Jen Nietfeld reached double figures as she finished with 10 points. Heather Schmackers had eight points, Beth May scored six points and Leanne Tobin added five points.

Bluffton blasts SA JH

GENEVA — The South Adams junior high boys basketball teams had solid first quarters, but didn’t do much after that in a pair of losses to the Bluffton Tigers Monday. The eighth grade team tumbled by a 49-25 score, and the seventh graders lost 42-22.

The eighth grade game was tied at 12 after the first quarter, but the Starfires scored just 13 points the rest of the way. Bluffton pulled out to an eight-point lead at halftime, and scored in double digits in every quarter.

Cody Meshberger was the only South Adams player in double figures as he finished with 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Kyle DeArmond and Chase Sprunger each had five points.

Nick Teeter and Heath Moser did all the scoring for the seventh grade team, which trailed just 12-10 after the first quarter. Bluffton went ahead by eight at halftime and finished off the game as the Starfires were held without a point in the third quarter.

Teeter finished with 12 points, and Moser followed with 10.[[In-content Ad]]
