Sager lifts First National with game-winning single (06/24/03)

Local Roundup

In a matter of minutes Michael Sager turned a frustrating game into a fantastic finish. He turned in the game-winning RBI as First National Bank pushed past Portland Moose for an 8-7 win in their Portland Junior League Pee Wee Reese League game Monday.

In the other Pee Wee Reese game Portland Lions defeated Portland Kiwanis in another tight contest, 7-6.

A couple more one-run games in Rookie League action saw Kessler’s Sporting Goods fight off Ponderosa 20-19, and Jay County Monuments squeeze past Coke 18-17. Also, Patriot Paints took a 23-18 victory over Cook’s Nursery.

Sager, the No. 4 and 5 hitters for First National, was 0-for-2 through his first three at bats, only reaching base on a first-inning walk. He had struck out in each of his other two trips to the plate, but made up for it in the sixth inning.

Trailing 7-6, First National opened the sixth inning with three walks wrapped around only an Austin Emerick pop out, which left the bases loaded for Colton Lombardo. He also walked to bring in the tying run.

Then came Sager’s chance, and he cashed in, ripping his only hit of the night right field to scored Kyle Simmons with the game-winner.

It was the third run of the game for Simmons, who also had a single and an RBI. Emerick notched a triple, and Craig Permenter and Aaron Emerick each scored twice.

Dustin Cline had a single, a run and two RBIs for Moose, and Cole Ingram scored two runs.

Lions 7, Kiwanis 6

Billy Wellman mashed a double and a triple, scoring once and driving in a run for Lions. He also controlled the mound for Lions, recording every out in the first three innings by way of the strikeout.

Eric Homan finished the game on the mound with six more strikeouts, giving the pair 15 in six innings.

Phillip Powell had the only two hits for Kiwanis, including a triple.

Kessler’s 20, Ponderosa 19

Two of Alex Dunn’s team-best three hits for Kessler’s were home runs.

Taylor Fugiett knocked a home run, a triple and a pair of doubles for Ponderosa.

Monuments 18, Coke 17

Vance Guntle and Brock McFarland each had three hits for Monuments.

Coke got four hits apiece from Brandon Green and Cade VanSkyock.

Paints 23, Cook’s 18

Jacob Schlosser ripped four hits in the Paints victory.

Brandon Poore and Ethan Bost each had four hits for Cook’s.

Rockets get revenge

Rain may have delayed it for a week, but weather couldn’t stop the Portland Rockets from taking revenge forever. The Rockets did just that Monday, paying the Grand Lake Mariners back for an earlier loss with a 5-4 win in Celina.

Portland (13-3) dropped a game to Grand Lake Monday, June 23. It was ahead of the Rockets the next day when rain stopped the contest before the necessary five innings.

The most recent contest wasn’t easy, coming down to a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Mariners worked the bases loaded with Adam Johnson on the mound, and had a chance to score only to have first baseman Ryan Rammel toss to Brandon Dillon to gun down the runner at the plate. Then Pete Byrum, Jay County class of 2000, came to the mound and struck out the final batter with the bases loaded behind him.

Rammel and Dillon were also offensive sparks for Portland, finishing with three and two losses respectively. James Nowicki also had two hits.

JR drops two

The Jay-Randolph American Legion baseball team slipped to 0-3 Sunday, dropping both games of a double-header to Kokomo. It lost the first game 2-0 and the second 3-2.

Game one was a designed pitcher’s duel, with Jay County’s Josh Jellison taking on Peru’s Richard Brindle. Brindle was selected with the 634th pick in this year’s Major League Baseball draft by the New York Yankees.

Brindle lived up to his billing, recording a no-hitter while striking out 18 batters.

Jellison also had a solid effort despite the lack of support, allowing just one earned run on six hits in six innings.

Kokomo again had the lead in game two, but Jay-Randolph scored once in the fourth inning and once in the fifth to move ahead 2-1. Kokomo tied the game in the sixth, and won in the seventh when a throwing error with two outs allowed the winning run to score.

Bryan Dodd and Cameron Troxell each had a pair of hits for JR in the defeat. James Brannan was the losing pitcher.
