South Adams netters capture ACAC crown (09/27/04)

BERNE — South Adams dominated the day, rolling to a pair of 4-1 victories to win the Allen County Athletic Conference boys tennis tournament Saturday.
The Starfires knocked off the Adams Central Jets 4-1 in the first round, and beat the Bluffton Tigers by the same score in the championship match. Bluffton got to the finals with a 5-0 win over Leo.
Brandon Liechty, Brett Zurcher and the team of Lee Hoeppner and Carson Sprunger were perfect on the day, each earning all-conference honors as they led South Adams to the title.
Liechty finished his day with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alex Pfister at No. 2 singles in the championship match. Zurcher topped Adrian Larrea in his tournament finale.
Playing at No. 2 doubles, Hoeppner and Sprunger needed three sets, but still beat Logan Aschliman and Nathan Baker 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
Tony VanGelder also won his match at No. 1 singles against Kevin Dedrick in the finals 6-3, 6-2. Jay Schwartz and Thomas Masterson dropped a couple of close sets to Jared Grandlienard and Zack Anderson at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 7-5.
Fort boys CC places 3rd
BROOKVILLE, Ohio — The Fort Recovery boys cross country team had a solid Saturday, finishing third at the Brookville Invitational.
Derrick Huelskamp posted the top Tribe time, finishing sixth in 17-minutes, 49 seconds. Mitch Fullenkamp was next in 12th in 18:18.
Austin Burkhardt was 20th in 18:56, followed by Steve Gaerke in 25th in 19:06 and Stan Roessner in 39th in 19:55.
Also running for the Indians were: Jim Roessner (43rd in 20:14), Matt Heinrichs (73rd in 22:47 and Tyler Huelskamp (65th JV in 25:09).
Lindsay Sudhoff posted the top time for the girls team in 15th in 22:57. Marisa Minor was 22nd in 24:25, Sam Bihn placed 26th in 25:00 and Leanne Pottkotter took 28th in 25:12.
Tina Roessner matched Huelskamp’s effort as she placed sixth in the junior high girls race in 14:01. Amber Heitkamp was 19th in 15:11, and Andrea Faller took 32nd in 16:04.
