South Adams stumbles

South Adams’ lead was short-lived Friday as it lost 8-5 to the Winchester Golden Falcons in baseball action.

The Starfires (0-2) grabbed a 4-1 lead in the second inning, but quickly gave it back. Winchester scored six times in the bottom of the frame and never looked back as it took the three-run win.

Aaron Givens took the defeat, lasting just 1 1/3 innings and giving up seven runs. Tyler Sprunger finished the game, allowing one run in 4 2/3 innings.

Jeremiah Kaeser had a pair of hits for South Adams.

The Starfires will play at Southern Wells Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Indians drop Jay

The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team evened its record at 2-2 with an 8-3 victory over Jay County Friday.

The Indians broke a 2-2 tie after three innings with two runs in the top of the fourth. They added two more runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to take control of the game.

Kelsie Will went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, and Brenda Rindler had one hit, three runs and two stolen bases.

Kristen Schwieterman finished with two hits, Lori Hart had two RBIs and Alyssa Tobe had a double and two RBIs.

Tobe also picked up the win, striking out 10 and walking five in seven innings.

Loramie slams Recovery

Fort Recovery never had much of a chance in its junior varsity baseball game against Fort Loramie Friday. The Indians gave up seven runs in the first inning and didn’t have much luck at stopping the Redskins after that in a 17-7 defeat.

Dusty Tobe had a pair of hits, including a double. He stole one base and drove in a pair of runs.

Greg Reinhart was 1-for-1 with a two runs and a stolen base. Matt Hein had a pair of RBIs, and Chris Galdeen stole one base.

Steve Trobridge took the loss for Fort Recovery (1-4).

Jay JV blasts Jets

Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team slammed Adams Central in five innings Friday, 11-4.

The Patriots scored in each of the first four innings led by Eric Somers. Somers finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs against the Jets.

Josh Shatto and Mark Kelly each had two hits and two runs, and Adam Brandt added a run.

Phil Brown picked up the win, tossing four innings of two-hit ball. He allowed four runs — all unearned — struck out four and walked two.

Stars blank Winchester

South Adams scored four runs in the second inning Thursday and that would be more than enough for Mikeala Smith. She shut out the Winchester Golden Falcons for a 6-0 Starfire victory.

Smith shut down the opposing offense, tossing seven innings of one-hit ball. She struck out 11 and walked won in the season-opener for South Adams.

Smith and Jill Lehman each had one hit, one run and a pair of RBIs in the victory. Carrie Nichols and Andrea Kaehr each had two hits and a run, and Emily Thornton and Renee Neuenschwander each scored once.

The Starfires play at Southern Wells Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Swimmers to begin in May

The Jay County summer swim team will hold its opening night for new swimmers Thursday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. at the JCHS pool. Coaches will evaluated the skill level of new swimmers to see where they may fit with the team.

Practices for the summer swim team will begin Monday, May 5. They will be on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the JCHS pool.

Swimmers 11-and-older will practice from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., and swimmers 10-and-under will practice from 5 to 5:45 p.m.
