Starfire spikers win third straight (09/23/03)

South Adams has figured something out.

A young and struggling group to start the season, the Starfire volleyball team has come around. It won its third match in a row Monday, scoring a dramatic come-from-behind victory over the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Saints 20-22, 14-21, 21-14, 21-19, 15-5.

Senior Kelly Mertz paced the Starfires offensively and defensively, and got plenty of help from Robyn Habegger.

Mertz racked up nine kills and had 19 digs in the victory. Habegger was next with five kills and 13 digs.

Alyssa Miller helped Mertz and Habegger with 17 assists, and added a trio of aces. LeeAnn Snyder and Kara Ross each had two blocks, and Renee Neuenschwander had four aces.

The South Adams junior varsity team lost 21-18, 17-21, 21-17, and the freshman team lost 21-14, 21-17.

The Starfires will look for their fourth consecutive win when they face Jay County today at 6 p.m.

Jay JV loses 1st

A first-quarter field goal was all the Jay County junior varsity football team could muster Monday in a 25-3 defeat to the Huntington North Vikings.

Chris Elmore put through a 35-yard field goal in the first period, but Huntington North pushed out to a 12-3 halftime lead. The Vikings added 13 more points in the final quarter to put the game out of reach.

Nick Foreman had an interception for the Patriots (1-1-1) in the contest, and Nathan Conatser recorded a fumble recovery.

Recovery freshman fall

Fort Recovery’s freshman football team managed one score, but that was all in a 50-6 loss to the St. Johns Blue Jays Monday. Jesse Fortkamp had the lone score on a 20-yard pass from Matt Tobe.

Chiefs win two vs. WJ, SA

East Jay, West Jay and South Adams got together for a middle school cross country meet, with East Jay taking a pair of wins and South Adams earning the other.

East Jay won the girls races with a score of 21, followed by South Adams’ 35 and West Jay’s 57. The Chiefs also took the seventh grade boys race with 28 points, compared to 39 for West Jay.

South Adams scored a 23 to win the eighth grade boys race, and East Jay had 32 points.


Amanda Johnson and Amber Detro led the East Jay girls to victory with a one-two finish. Johnson crossed the line in 12:36, and Detro was 10 seconds behind.

Following them were Kylie Wellman in fifth, Amanda Laux in ninth and Brianne Wellman in 14th.

Maddie Moore was the top South Adams finisher in third place, with Taylor Miller in fourth. Shannon Mussleman placed seventh, Chelsey Nevil was 10th, and Rachel Sprunger took 11th.

Kelly Weaver placed sixth to lead West Jay, and Kristin Selvey was eighth. Krystal Hutchens came in 12th, Kala Barber was 15th, and Brittany Burris took 16th.

Brady Mills won the seventh grade boys race for West Jay, but Steven Kelly (12:47), Joey Franks (13:26) and David Darby (13:23) finished second, third and fourth respectively to lead East Jay to the win. Colt Martin placed ninth for the Chiefs, and Dan Muhlenkamp took 10th.

Jeremiah Cotherman was fifth for the Eagles, with Ty Fullenkamp eighth, Willie Mayfield 12th and Spence Atman 13th.

David Dynes placed sixth four South Adams, Nathan Rupp was seventh, and Alex Brito took 11th, but the Starfires did not have enough runners for a team score.

South Adams took the eighth grade boys race with Adam McLaughlin leading the way with the victory. Jase Sprunger took second, and Marcus Hoover placed third.

Justin Somers was seventh, and Brian Lehman rounded our the team scoring in eighth.

Edwin Clott placed second for East Jay with Cody Sutton fifth. Leo Muhlenkamp placed sixth, Justin Hall was ninth, and Justin Moser placed 10th.

Fort tickets Thursday

Tickets for Fort Recovery’s home football game against St. Johns Friday will go on sale Thursday.

They will be available in the high school office from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and from 12:23 to 2 p.m. Friday. Tickets will also be sold in the middle school office Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Pre-sale tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. All tickets at the gate will be $5.

Correction

The statistical line for Muncie Southside’s Tommy Isom in the Rebels’ win over Jay County Friday was incorrect in Saturday’s The Commercial Review. He carried 10 times in the contest for 113 yards.
