Starfire tankers suffer 1st defeats (12/08/04)

Local Roundup

BERNE — The Starfires piled up the seconds and thirds. But didn’t win enough to avoid their first losses of the season.

South Adams’ swim teams each fell for the first time Tuesday as the girls team lost 87-81 and the boys team took a 95-75 defeat.

The meet marked the first loss for the girls team, which opened 5-0. The Starfires won their first six meets of the season last year.

The boys team is now 2-1.

There were only three victories all night for the Starfires, two of which came from the Lehmans.

Sophomore Haleigh Lehman cruised in the girls 100-yard butterfly. She was first by more than two seconds over Nicole Stein in 1-minute, 7.55 seconds.

Senior Heath Lehman, Haleigh’s brother, matched her effort by eking out a win over Colin Brown in the boys 100-yard butterfly.

He won with a time of 1:05.18, just ahead of Brown’s 1:05.62.

The only other Starfire win was recorded by Chelsea Yoder, who took the 50-yard freestyle in 27.37.
