Starfires drop final two games (06/02/03)

Local Roundup

Despite huge offensive efforts from several players in game two Saturday, South Adams lost both ends of a double-header to Mississinewa in its regular-season finale, 10-4 and 12-11.

After allowing six runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined to lose the first game, South Adams found its offense in the second game.

Jeremiah Kaeser came alive, going a perfect 5-for-5 in the second game. He hit a home run, scored three times and had a couple of RBIs.

Kyle White, also the leading hitter in game one, went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. He was followed by Zane Martens, who hit a three-run home run, and Justin Haines, who finished with two hits and two runs.

Still, all of the offensive production was not enough after the Starfires fell behind 9-6 after two innings.

They battled back, but did not have enough to finish the rally.

Aaron Givens took the loss in relief of Kyle Neuenschwander. Givens allowed two runs — one earned — in five innings of work.

White went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run in the game one. Lance Balsiger had one hit, one run and one RBI.

Tyler Sprunger took the loss, allowing eight runs — six earned — in seven innings. He struck out two and walked two.

South Adams will play host Garrett in sectional semifinal action Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Rockets open 3-1

The Portland Rockets opened their 2003 season this weekend with a pair of double-headers.

They started with a split against LaMargarita Saturday, losing the opening contest of the year 9-1 before winning the second 3-2.

They took both games Sunday against the Indiana Cardinals, 8-0 and 12-0.

Jay County graduate Pete Byrum was a big factor in a couple of the victories, earning the win in the first game against the Cardinals, and picking up a save against LaMargarita.

Matt Ousley, South Adams, earned the victory against LaMargarita, and Phil Ernst got the second win over the Cardinals.

Mitch Waters, a 2002 Jay County graduate, had five hits in the two-game set against the Cardinals, and Ryan Rammel followed with four.
