Starfires edge Adams Central for ACAC victory (05/21/03)

The South Adams softball team continued its recent string of success Tuesday with a 4-3 win over the Adams Central Jets. It was the team’s third win in its last four games as the Starfires climbed to 6-11 this season.
Trailing 3-2 with just the bottom of the seventh inning left to play, South Adams came alive. It scored twice in the bottom of the final frame, winning in its last at bat for the second time in the past week.
Andrea Kaehr led the offense with a 2-for-4 effort. She scored twice and had a pair of RBIs.
Carrie Nichols also went 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Mickayla Smith had three hits, including a double.
Smith also notched the victory, allowing three unearned runs on eight hits. She struck out six and walked three.
The Starfires will play at home today against Union City at 4:30 p.m.
Fort gives awards
Fort Recovery held its spring sports banquet Tuesday, honoring this season’s baseball, softball and track athletes. Twenty-six Indian athletes earned All-Midwest Athletic Conference Academic honors.
The boys track team led the way with nine athletes as all-academic honorees. They were Derick Faller, Jason Groff, Christian Guenter, Derrick Huelskamp, Stan Roessner, Tom Roessner, Joe Walter, David Willmann and Mark Willmann.
The softball team was not far behind, with Julie Faller, Sarah Garman, Joscie Kaup, Allison Perkeybile, Krystal Rammel, Sarah Schmitz, Tanya Thobe and Alyssa Tobe picking up the honor. Greg Faller, Dusty Guggenbiller, Greg Snyder, Mitch Staugler and Nick Wehrkamp were awarded from the baseball team, as were Nicole Abels, Kimbra Hein, Emily Wendel and Kristi Westgerdes in girls track.
To earn all-academic honors, athletes must be a sophomore or older, earn a varsity letter and earned a 3.3 grade point average or higher.
Winning the Indian award was Mark Knapke in baseball, Schmitz in softball, Tyler Niekamp in boys track and Westgerdes in girls track.
Westgerdes and Niekamp also picked up Most Valuable awards for track. Greg Heitkamp was named Most Improved in baseball, and Rammel took the award for the softball team.
