Starfires slam Bluffton (05/24/03)

All of a sudden the South Adams softball team’s offense returned with a vengeance. Five different Starfires had two or more hits Thursday in a 10-0 victory over the Bluffton Tigers.

South Adams (7-12) methodically put up runs here and there while allowing just three hits against Bluffton.

Carrie Nichols, Mickayla Smith, Andrea Kaehr, Emily Thornton and Candice Miller each notched two hits in the contest. Nichols had a double, a run and four RBIs, and Thornton scored once had two RBIs and stole a base.

Jill Lehman had a double and scored twice, and Kindle Inniger and Jessica Smith each added a pair of runs.

Mickayla Smith earned the win, striking out five batters in seven innings.

The Starfires play their final regular-season game at home Friday against Fort Wayne Snider at 4:30 p.m.

Patriots draw Norwell

So much of the luck of the draw.

The Jay County baseball team didn’t get the best result from the sectional draw held Thursday. But, at least it will get a chance at some revenge.

The Class 3A No. 5 Patriots (16-3) will play the Norwell Knights (14-10) in the first round of the Blackford sectional Monday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Knights handed Jay County the first of their three losses this season by a score of 10-0.

Maconaquah and the host Bruins will play in the other first-round game Monday, June 2 at 5 p.m.

The winners of those contests will play in the semifinals Saturday, June 7 at 11 a.m. Bellmont and Peru will meet in the second semifinal at 2:30 p.m.

The championship contest will also be Saturday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.

SA crushes Tigers

The South Adams baseball team took care of the Bluffton Tigers in one inning Thursday, scoring 11 runs in the fifth inning of a 17-11 victory.

Doug Roop had a pair of doubles for the Starfires. He scored three runs had added a pair of RBIs.

Aaron Givens was 2-for-5 with a double, three runs and an RBI, and Tyler Sprunger had two hits, a run and three RBIs. Kyle Neuenschwander had two hits and two RBIs, Brian “Buzz” Caffee had three hits and Kyle White had two hits.

Neuenschwander also took the victory, allowing eight runs — five earned — in five innings. He struck out two and walked two.

South Adams will host Fort Wayne Harding Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

The sectional draw for the Starfires was also released Thursday, and they will get a bye through the first round. Their first game will be in semifinal action Thursday, June 5 against host Garrett at 7:30 p.m.

The first round of the sectional will be played Monday, June 2, with Woodlan playing Churubusco in the first contest at 5 p.m. Bluffton will take on Adams Central at 7:30 p.m. The winners of those games will play Thursday, June 5 at 5 p.m., with the South Adams/Garrett game to follow.

The championship contest will be Saturday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Junior League

Portland Optimist defeated Inman U-Loc 8-4 in Willie Mays League action in the only Portland Junior League game Thursday.

Brian Walker led Optimist to the win with two hits, including a triple. Dillon Ainsworth earned the win.

Pak-a-Sak got two hits from Austin Mann.

Reinhart victorious

Gary Reinhart had the top overall score as the Fort Recovery Spring Trap League completed its season recently. He won by breaking 277 of his 300 targets.

Reinhart also led his squad past the other 21 teams in the league. Joining him were Dave Knapke, Ted Stammen, Tom Bailey and Joe Schweiterman.

Individual high scorers on each team were also awarded. They were Craig Buschor, Joe Harlamert, Terral Higgins, John Backs, Jon Smith, Mike Knapschaffer, Brian Bailey, Tom Nietfield and Brad Westgerdes. Also Keith Lindsey, Alvin Alig, Steve Shauver, Shawn Wehrkamp, Tom Sudhoff, Harris Mills, Ken Lefeld, Curt Long, Matt Wenning and Tom Homan.[[In-content Ad]]
