Starfires stumble in opener (08/19/03)

Local Roundup

The season didn’t start off the way the state-ranked Starfires would have liked.

South Adams, ranked ninth in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association preseason volleyball poll, opened Monday with a 21-18, 21-19, 21-13 defeat against the Norwell Knights.

Senior Kelly Mertz paced the Starfires on both offense and defense. She finished with team highs of five kills and nine digs.

She also notched a pair of aces.

Fellow senior Lee Ann Snyder picked up six digs and added a pair of blocks.

Sophomore setter Alyssa Miller had 11 assists.

The South Adams junior varsity team took a 7-21, 21-6, 21-15 defeat while the freshman team scored a 21-12, 21-9 victory.

The Starfires get right back into the action today with a trip to Leo at 6 p.m.

Byrge stays strong

A trio of top 10 finishes has Dunkirk’s Kenny Byrge sitting in fourth place in the United Midget Racing Associations driver point standings.

Byrge had his best recent finish Friday at the Bloomington Speedway. He started fifth in his heat on the way to a second-place finish, and began eighth in the feature race before climbing to another runner-up finish.

He was second in the feature race to 20-year veteran and nine time series champion Terry Goff.

Byrge also placed 10th at the Speedrome in Indianapolis on August 7 and sixth at the Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville on July 26. He had car problems at the Shelby County Fairgrounds on August 2, leading to the only time he hasn’t finished a feature this year.

His success also has his car owner and grandfather, Larry Teegarden, sitting fourth in the owners’ points standings.[[In-content Ad]]
