Stars drop 15th straight (12/15/04)

Local Roundup

OSSIAN — Winning isn’t everything. But, it’s something the Starfires probably hope to do at some point this season.

The South Adams basketball teams’ difficulties continued Tuesday as the girls lost 51-24 to the Norwell Knights.

It was their 15th straight loss as they dropped to 0-8 on the season. The boys team is having an equally hard time as it is 0-5 and has lost a school record 17 in a row.

As has been the case many times for both teams this year, the Starfires were able to stay in the game in the first half. Despite scoring just five points in the first quarter, they trailed by only six at halftime.

But, Norwell (3-6) outscored South Adams 31-10 after the break to pull away.

The Starfires shot just 20 percent from the field, including a 1-for-11 (9 percent) effort from 3-point range.

Kayla Coblentz paced the team with 10 points, and Julie Muhlenkamp added eight points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Coblentz had five rebounds, and Jessie Liechty notched a pair of assists.

Mackenzie Warwick lit up the scoreboard for the Knights, hitting all of her team’s four 3-pointers. She finished with 24 points, and Taylor Plummer added 12.

South Adams also lost the junior varsity game, 44-17.

Tribe stays perfect

FORT RECOVERY — They did it in different styles Tuesday, but the Fort Recovery junior high girls basketball teams both remained undefeated.

The eighth graders got an offensive explosion in the second quarter as it topped the Minster Wildcats 36-24. The seventh grade team used stifling defense throughout for a 25-8 victory.

Fort Recovery’s eighth graders trailed by one after the first quarter, but outscored Minster 16-3 in the second.

Kinsey Wenning led the team with 10 points as it improved to 4-0. Joanna Snyder added nine points, and Kelsey Wuebker scored five.

Nicole Pottkotter scored more points than the entire Minster seventh grade team, finishing with 10. The Indians (4-0) held the visitors to three points or fewer in every quarter.

Kelsey Brockman followed with five points, and Chelsey Leuthold added four.
