Stars keep perfect record (04/16/03)

Starfire Roundup

After finishing just over .500 a year ago, the South Adams softball team has served notice to start the 2003 season.

The Starfires won their third straight to open the season with a 5-2 victory over Allen County Athletic Conference rival Leo Tuesday. They are now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACAC.

South Adams jumped on the board early and then let its defense take care of the rest. It score two runs in the first, two more in the second and one in the third for a 5-0 lead.

The Lions managed a couple of runs late in the game, but couldn’t rattle Starfire starter Mikeala Smith.

Smith got her third win of the year, allowing two runs — one earned — on eight hits in seven innings. She struck out one and walked one.

Carrie Nichols and Jill Lehman were responsible for much of the South Adams offense.

Lehman went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Nichols had just one hit, but it was a two-run home run.

The Starfires will look for their fourth straight win Saturday when they play at Norwell at 11 a.m.

SA tops the Lions

The South Adams baseball team outlasted Leo until it got dark, holding on at home for a 14-10 win in six innings.

The Starfires (2-3) trailed 6-3 after a five-run third inning by Leo, but rallied back in the next three frames. They scored twice in the bottom of the third, five times in the fourth and four times in the fifth build a 14-6 lead.

The Lions (0-2) scored four runs in the sixth to start a comeback, but didn’t get a chance in the seventh as the game was called because of darkness.

Kyle White led a homer-happy day for South Adams, going 2-for-3 with two home runs. He had five RBIs and scored three times.

Kyle Neuenschwander and Jeremiah Kaeser also hit home runs for the Starfires.

Neuenschwander went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs, and Kaeser was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Brian “Buzz” Caffee also had three hits and drove in a pair of runs.

Tyler Sprunger earned the victory, allowing four unearned runs on four hits in the final three innings.
