BERNE — The Starfires didn’t wait long to get back on the winning track.

After suffering their first losses of the season Tuesday to Fort Wayne Concordia, the South Adams swim teams bounced back with an absolute destruction of Fort Wayne North Side Thursday. They took first place in 23 out of 24 events as the girls team rolled to a 137-30 victory and the boys team finished on top by a 116-43 final.

Senior Chelsea Yoder and sophomore Haleigh Lehman paced the girls team (6-1), which swept the top three spots in four events and added one-two finishes in three more.

Yoder earned her wins in back-to-back events, first cruising to victory by more than two seconds with a time of 27.06 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. She got right back into the pool to lead a sweep of the 100-yard freestyle, finishing ahead of teammates Holly Yoder and Shannon Muselman in 1-minute, 8.30 seconds.

Lehman led a sweep of the 200-yard individual medley with teammates Whitney Liechty and Talitha Maven as she finished in 2:37.72. She and Bethany Maven went one-two in the 500-yard freestyle, with Lehman winning in 6:21.61.

Yoder and Lehman teamed with Ashley Gresla and Courtney Hewitt to take the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:56.81. Yoder, Hewitt, Liechty and Channing Yoder were first in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:12.67, and Lehman, Gresla, Margaret Beymer and Talitha Maven won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:29.62.

Beymer also picked up a pair of individual victories, first leading a sweep of the 200-yard freestyle in 2:20.37 with teammates Gresla and Channing Yoder. She was followed by Gresla again as she took first in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:03.87.

Whitney Liechty added a victory in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:17.20., and Channing Yoder took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:23.74.

Heath Lehman, Matt Kruse and Carson Sprunger each won two individual events and contributed to a pair of relay wins for the boys team (3-1).

Lehman took the 500-yard freestyle in 5:58.39 as he and Drew Dull combined for a one-two finish. He also won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.11.

Kruse and Andy Lehman went one-two in the 100-yard butterfly, with Kruse winning in 1:01.33. He was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.79.

Sprunger finished the 200-yard individual medley in 2:30.42 as he and Andy Lehman posted the team’s third one-two finish. He also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.85.

Heath Lehman, Sprunger and Kruse joined John Gresla to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:59.86. Heath Lehman, Kruse, Gresla and Dull took the 400-yard freestyle, and Sprunger, Andy Lehman, Dull and Brent Hirschey were first in the 200-yard freestyle relay 1:47.60.

Gresla won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.89.

The only win for North Side came in the boys 100-yard freestyle by junior Russell Dill in 57.21 seconds.

Norwell pounds Jay

PORTLAND — The Jay County swim teams each managed just three wins Thursday as they fell to the Norwell Knights.

Norwell swept the opening relay in girls competition, taking all 12 points en route to a 124-54 victory. The boys team fell by a 114-63 score.

Senior Derick Lee and junior Lindsey Vesperry picked up four of the Patriots’ six wins on the evening.

Lee had his best time of the season in the 100-yard butterfly and just missed breaking the 1-minute barrier as he won in 1-minute, 0.09 seconds. He was also first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.53.

Vesperry nailed down two personal best times in the sprints. She took first in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.49, and won the 100-yard freestyle by nearly four seconds in 1:02.64.

Matthew Peterson captured the third win for the boys team, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.63. Julie Sours added a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke for the girls team in 1:23.87.

The girls team is now 2-4 on the year, and the boys are 0-3.[[In-content Ad]]
