Arrested

A Pennville man and a Portland man are being held at the Jay County Jail on $50,000 bond each after they were arrested Wednesday by Jay County police for child molesting.

Jay Circuit Court warrants were issued Wednesday for the arrest of Larry T. Benefiel Jr., 29, 410 E. Pleasant St., Pennville, and Michael A. Motter, 26, 114 Dogwood Lane, Portland.

Benefiel, who was arrested on one count of child molesting, a class A felony, is accused of performing sexual acts with a then 13-year-old rural Redkey girl in October of 2003.

Motter, who was arrested on two counts of child molesting, both class A felonies, is accused of performing sexual acts with a then 13-year-old Portland girl twice in November of this year.

Auction

An ornament auction to help raise funds for the new addition to the Jay County Community Center will be held Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the center.

The public is invited to attend the auction to bid on more than 200 Christmas ornaments that have been decorated by local residents, merchants and organizations, as well as children as young as 3 years old.

The variety of decorating styles includes everything from handpainted to “ice cream cone” ornaments, said Debi Gillespie, who is in charge of the auction. “We have a Raggedy Ann one that is just amazing,” said Gillespie. Some have gold medallions in them that were minted here in Portland.

Anyone who would like to donate a handmade ornament for the auction may do so by contacting Gillespie at (260) 726-7136.

Spinning

A Jewish community center at Indiana University in Bloomington will try to twirl its way into the Guinness Book of World Records Sunday by spinning at least 561 dreidels at the same time.

If all the dreidels spin simultaneously for more than 10 seconds, the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at Indiana University will beat out the University of Maryland for the record, The Associated Press reported.

“We just thought it would be a lot of fun,” program director Andy Gitelson said. “It’s kind of a way to get back at Maryland for beating us in the NCAA tournament a few years back.”

Deaths

Leroy L. Binegar, 77, Miller’s Merry Manor, Dunkirk, a former resident of 208 W. Jay St., Dunkirk.

Doris J. Hoelscher, 60, Versailles, Ohio, sister of a Portland resident.
