OPEN HOUSE
The Jay County Historical Society will host an open house Saturday and Sunday at its museum at the end of East Main Street in Portland.
The museum will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. each day.
There is no charge for admission, but donations are accepted.
FIRE RUN
Portland firefighters were called to a carpet fire at Piedmont Apartments on Wednesday at 6:17 p.m.
The fire was caused by a lamp that fell over and started a small area of carpet on fire, according to an official from the Portland Fire Department.
There was smoke and minimal fire damage to the apartment occupied by Don Knipp. Knipp lived in apartment 796 at the West Seventh Street apartment complex.
Ten firefighters responded with two trucks.
THEFT
A rural Dunkirk woman reported on Wednesday the theft of a stove from a mobile home that she owns in a rural Portland mobile home park.
Rosalie Jacobs, 8203 East 250 North, told Jay County police that she was in the process of selling a mobile home at Oakwood Mobile Home Park, 1237 North U.S. 27, Portland.
The occupants were later evicted and allegedly took a Whirlpool electric stove from the mobile home that belonged to Jacobs.
A value for the stove was not provided on a report by county police.
DEER ACCIDENT
A police car driven by deputy with the Jay County Sheriff’s Department struck a deer at 1:28 a.m. today in Noble Township.
Matthew P. Simmons, 31, 1008 W. Main St., Portland, told a fellow officer he was driving east on county road 200 North, about 600 feet west of county road 500 East, when a deer came onto the road.
Simmons said he could not avoid the collision with the 2003 Chevrolet Impala, registered to Jay County Commissioners.
Damage to the vehicle was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
PORTLAND ACCIDENT
Vehicles driven by a Portland woman and a rural Portland man collided this morning on South Meridian Street near Tenth Street in Portland.
The accident, which happened at about 9:25 a.m., involved vehicles driven by Carol J. Mettert, 59, 315 E. North St., and Ralph M. Steffy, 81, 1901 South Woodland Park Drive.
Mettert told Portland police she was northbound on Meridian Street and attempted to turn west into a private drive.
While making the turn into the driveway, her vehicle collided with a southbound vehicle driven by Steffy.
Combined estimated damage to Mettert’s 1988 Oldmobile Cutlass and Steffy’s 1998 Lincoln Town Car was $1,000 to $2,500.
AREA COURTS
A Bryant man was recently fined in a Celina, Ohio, court.
Larry L. Alig, 31, Bryant, was fined $140 plus costs in Celina Municipal Court after pleading no contest to charges of no driver’s license, speeding and no seat belt.[[In-content Ad]]
