Tickets available for Starfires' day at the Dome (08/15/03)

Tickets are now available for the South Adams football team’s game against Heritage, which will be played at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m.

Those interested can purchase tickets from any Starfire football player or cheerleader until August 27. Pre-sale tickets are $9 — which covers all four games to be played that day — and tickets at the gate will be $12.

Other Allen County Athletic Conference games to be played in the Dome that day will be Leo vs. Southern Wells, South Central vs. Adams Central and Woodlan vs. Bluffton. The South Adams varsity cheerleaders, band and drill corps will also be featured during the event.

Vormohr wins four

Cori Vormohr had yet another outstanding day of swimming as she competed in the State Games of America in Hartford, Connecticut recently.

Vormohr, who will be a seventh grader at East Jay this year, competed in five events. She finished first in the 50-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, and second in the 50-yard butterfly.

Athletes qualified for the games by being a medal winner from state games in the summer of 2001 or 2002 or the winter of 2002. Vormohr qualified by medaling in the 2001 and 2002 Hoosier State Games.

More than 5,000 athletes from 43 states competed at the games, twice as many as were involved in the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Reid victorious

Fairmount’s Boston Reid picked up a big win recently, taking first in the Ultimate Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

He drives for Davis Racing, owned by Bill Davis of Portland, and is sponsored by Qualtech Tool of Portland. He brought home $30,00 in winnings for the win.

Abbot takes title

Kim Abbott of Portland won the Portland Country Club Ladies Association Championship, which was held recently.

Abbott, a 2001 graduate of Jay County High School, now plays for the University of Indianapolis. Kimiko Sato of Berne finished second in the championship flight.

Susan Meinerding, Portland, was first in the A flight, and Debbie Abbot finished second.

The Ladies Association also held it’s Rally for a Cure outing recently with Sato, Lola Joy and Ramonda Fisher finishing as the winning team. Bonnie Badders won the closest to the pin contest, with Brooke Grider placing second.

Come cruising

The Crown City Cruisers will hold a cruise-in Saturday, August 23 at The Whirl in Redkey.

Golf outing

Having finally dried off, the Wabash Valley Golf Club will sponsor a “We survived the flood” scramble Saturday, August 23.

The entry fee is $35 per golfer, which includes 18 holes of golf, a T-shirt and lunch. The event will begin at 7 a.m.

Fitness hours

The fall hours for the South Adams Fitness Center were released this week.

The Fitness Center will be open from 5:30 to 7 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and on Friday. It will be open Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m.

Evening hours for the Fitness Center are 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The new schedule begins on Monday, August 18.

Football food

The Jay County football parents will be preparing hot dogs, hamburgers and brats for the Patriot and Fort Recovery Indian fans prior to the teams’ scrimmage tonight.

The cook-out will begin at 5 p.m., and fans from both schools will be able to buy meals in the parking lot or at the Harold E. Schutz Stadium concession stands. A meal of a hot dog, chips and drink will be $2, and hamburger or brat, chips and a drink will be $3.[[In-content Ad]]
