CLARIFICATION
Additional and corrected information on three felony arrests was made available Monday by the Jay County Jail and the Jay County prosecutor’s office on Monday.
Incorrect information was provided on records from the Jay County Jail for an item on page 1 of Saturday’s edition of The Commercial Review.
Two Pennville men were arrested Friday by local police for burglary, a class B felony, and theft, a class D felony.
Jay Circuit Court warrants were issued on Nov. 17 for the arrest of Erin D. Barker, 20, 245 S. Washington St., and Joshua E. Schlechty, 22, 260 E. Second St. The men are accused of breaking into a Pennville residence and stealing guns on Aug. 15.
Also Friday, Portland police arrested Tonjia L. Blevins, 41, 679 Western Ave., Portland, for forgery and three counts of fraud on a financial institution, all class C felonies.
Blevins is accused of using a forged check to open a checking account at a Portland bank in April 2003 and withdrawing money from an account at another Portland bank in July 2003.
ONE INJURED
A rural Portland teenager received a minor head injury in a two-vehicle accident on Monday at 3:50 p.m.
Erin A. Schmiesing, 18, 2845 Boundary Pike, was later treated in the emergency room of Jay County Hospital. According to the Jay County police report, she was not transported by Jay Emergency Medical Service.
Schmiesing was driving northwest on Boundary Pike, when she collided with a 1984 Mercedes car driven by Dustan S. Howell, 20, 1930 West Ind. 67, Portland.
Howell was driving east on county road 200 South, when he stopped at the intersection of Boundary Pike. He told police that failed to see the 1994 Ford Aerostar driven by Schmiesing.
Damage to Schmiesing’s van, registered to Gary L. Schmiesing, same address as driver, and Howell’s car, registered to Debbie and Steve Howell, same address as driver, was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
DEER ACCIDENT
A car driven by a Celina, Ohio man struck a deer in Wabash Township on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Kelly L. Slusher, 37, 7655 Erastus Durbin Road, was driving west on Ind. 67, about 500 feet west of county road 850 East, when a deer ran onto the road.
He told Jay County police that could not avoid the collision with deer causing damage estimated between $1,000 and $2,500 to his 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass.
PICK UP SCHEDULE
The trash and recycling pick up schedule for Portland residents will change due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Trash normally picked up on Thursday will be collected on Wednesday, and trash pick up scheduled for Friday will be done on Monday.
Items for recycling normally picked up on Thursday will be collected on Friday.
HOUSING AUTHORITY
The Portland Housing Authority will distribute $13,221 in rental assistance, plus $414 in utility payments, during December.
This funding, which comes from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, was approved by the local board this week.
Baseball tryouts
The D.C. Lightning baseball team for 10-year-olds is preparing for the 2004 season.
The team plays various area teams, as well as some from Kentucky and Ohio. Games are played under high school rules.
