Wal-Mart hurt by slow economy

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported this week that fourth-quarter net income fell 21 percent to $4.43 billion or $1.36 per share. The same quarter a year earlier saw net income of $5.61 billion or $1.67 per share.
A sluggish economy and government benefit cuts have had an impact on the world’s largest retailer, which has seen four straight quarterly declines.
Sales, earnings up
Franklin Electric Co. Inc. reported that fourth quarter sales in 2013 were up 12 percent, totaling $229.7 million, compared to $205.2 million the same quarter a year earlier.
Adjusted earnings per share were 30 cents, compared to 28 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Both the sales and adjusted net income figures set records for the company, which has a manufacturing site in Bluffton.
LifeStream names two advisory council members
Nathaniel Bryan and Melissa Grimes will serve on the LifeStream/Quality Housing Development Advisory Council.
Bryan and Grimes, who were recently confirmed as council members, will be working to establish continuation of programs and services that focus on people 60 and older, people with physical disabilities and their caregivers.
Grimes is a marketing director at Persimmon Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Portland, a co-facilitator for the Jay County Alzheimer’s Support Group and a member of the Jay County Chamber of Commerce.
Bryan is a regional manager for Meridian Health Services in Portland and is a member of Jay County Chamber of Commerce and Rotary International.
Maloy to lead Energize ECI
Dennis Maloy was recently hired as the new president and CEO of Energize-ECI, Inc., the regional economic development partnership that represents Jay and its surrounding counties.
He previously served as executive director of Ivy Tech Corporate College in Bloomington.
Trumbull to retire
Scott Trumbull, chief executive officer of Franklin Electric in Fort Wayne, recently announced that he will retire May 2.
Gregg Sengstack has been appointed to succeed Trumbull.
Sengstack first joined the board in 1988 and has been president and chief operating officer since 2011.
Franklin Electric is a global leader in the production and marketing of systems and components for the movement of water and automotive fuels.
Grant to fund radiology equipment
Mercer County Civic Foundation recently gave a grant to Mercer County Community Hospital so it can purchase new ultrasound equipment in the radiology department.
The new equipment will provide better patient positioning for exams, said Sara Bruening, director of Radiology Services at Mercer Health.
Mercer Health performs more than 3,000 ultrasound exams each year.
New nurse
Family LifeCare in Berne recently hired Javon Steffen as a pediatric nurse for its Wings of Hope Pediatric Program.
Steffen, a Bluffton resident, is licensed in seven states and is currently working on her MSN FNP from the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne.
She has worked in pediatrics at Riley Children’s Hospital and as a traveling pediatric nurse in Colorado, Florida and Wisconsin.
