Warriors overpower South Adams spikers (09/29/04)

BERNE — The Star Dome hasn’t been a fun place to play for the Starfires.

South Adams’ volleyball team won its second match of the season at home against Leo, but has not won in Berne since. That streak continued Tuesday as the Starfires dropped by a 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 score to the Woodlan Warriors.

Robyn Habegger finished with a team-high 17 digs. She also matched Renee Neuenschwander for a team-best five kills and one ace.

Alyssa Miller finished with 13 assists, and Danielle Roman had nine digs. Brooke Fox and Kara Ross notched two blocks apiece.

South Adams also lost in junior varsity and freshman action by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 6-25, 27-25, 25-6 respectively.

The Starfires will play at Bluffton Thursday at 6 p.m.

EJ 8th crushes Dennis

RICHMOND — East Jay’s eighth grade football team spread out the scoring Tuesday as four different players reached the end zone in a 30-6 victory over Richmond Dennis.

Dalton McGill got the scoring started with a 30-yard run in the first quarter. Billy Wellman added a 15-yard run in the second quarter, and he passed to McGill after each of the first two scores for successful two-point conversions.

Also in the first quarter, Casey Kenney tackled the Dennis quarterback in the end zone for a safety.

East Jay continued to build on the 18-0 halftime lead with a 10-yard touchdown run by Adam Garringer in the third quarter. Cole Ingram scored on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Dennis also scored its lone touchdown in the final period.

Wellman also had an interception in the contest.

Eagle gridders split

DUNKIRK — Drew Locke came up big in the windy, rainy and chilly conditions Tuesday, leading the West Jay seventh grade football team to a 12-0 victory over Union City Westside. The eighth grade team lost 12-6.

Locke scored both touchdowns for the seventh graders, running the first in from three yards out in the second quarter. He added a 2-yard scoring run in the third quarter for the final margin.

Taylor Farmer also had a fumble recovery for the seventh-grade team.

Alan Brown scored the lone touchdown for the eighth grade team in the third quarter, tying the game at six. However, Union City reached the end zone in the final few minutes of the fourth quarter to take the victory.

Blue Jays defeat Fort

FORT RECOVERY — The Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays were too much for Fort Recovery Tuesday as the seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams each lost in three games. The eighth graders fell 25-12, 22-25, 15-11, and the seventh grade team took a 20-25, 25-21, 15-10 defeat.

Kinsey Wenning paced the eighth graders (5-5) with six digs and four blocks. She also had six points and two kills.

Chelsea Klenke posted team highs of 10 points and six assists.

Anne Koesters racked up eight kills and two blocks, and Kelly Sudhoff had five points and three digs.

Kelsey Wuebker and Heidi Tobe each had two kills, and Wuebker added five assists.

Nicole Pottkotter had six points and two kills for the seventh grade squad (8-3). Josie Guggenbiller scored nine points, Alyssa Brackman had three digs and Emily May finished with two kills.

Carly Staugler had four assists, and Chelsey Leuthold posted three assists.

Chief spikers cruise

UNION CITY — East Jay’s volleyball teams had no problems Tuesday, each topping Union City Westside in two games. The eighth graders rolled to a 25-16, 25-16 victory, and the seventh graders won 25-17, 25-17.

Kaelee Keller dominated the eighth grade match, posting team highs of seven points, nine digs and two kills. Three of her points came on aces.

Jamie Heaps matched Keller as she also scored seven points. Matching the team high of two kills were Sarah Westgerdes and Amy Alig.

Mackenzie Loy finished with eight digs and six points. Westgerdes also added three blocks.

Lindsey Wellman went on a serving rampage for the seventh grade team, finishing with 16 points. She scored five of those points on aces, and also added one kill.

Jamie Klinger and Kelsey Wood added six points apiece. Liz Walker had a pair of assists, and Becky Muhlenkamp and Pazia Speed each had one kill.[[In-content Ad]]
