We're glad you're here (8/18/03)
Opinion
Early arrivals for this week's 38th annual Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Show were unloading a piece of equipment the other day.
As chains were loosened and ramps were positioned, one of those on hand cautioned the other about the possibility that something might be stolen.
The engine owner shook his head decisively.
"Not at Portland," he said.
It was a moment which speaks volumes about the quality of the Tri-State show and the caliber of the individuals it attracts each year in the tens of thousands.
Our only hope is that the community at large gets marks that high.
Each year in August, the Jay County seat changes. Thousands of visitors roll in, some returning for the umpteenth time, some coming for the first. Their traffic complicates life for the locals, with golf carts and other more mysterious contraptions parked at the dozens of garage sales and flea markets.
But we're delighted to have them here.
For the next several days, we'll have to opportunity to meet folks who've traveled from all over America, from Canada, from the United Kingdom, from Australia, and from who knows where else, just to come to the Jay County Fairgrounds, to enjoy the shade of our oak and hickory trees, and to renew friendships.
That's a privilege we take seriously and one we wouldn't trade away for anything.
To our visitors, welcome.
We're always glad to see you. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
