Winchester shuts out Lions (06/11/03)

Winchester’s Brock Morrison and Josh Chamness combined to strike out 11 batters Tuesday in a 2-0 victory over Redkey Lions in their Portland Junior League Sandy Koufax League game.

In the other Koufax contest Graphic Printing topped Portland Elks 8-3.

In Willie Mays League games Pak-A-Sak defeated Vance Heating and Cooling 20-9, and Inman-U-Loc topped MainSource Bank 15-8.

Minor League softball games say Loy’s Auction and Realty beat Graphic Printing 25-15, and First National Bank defeated Tyson 20-11.

Morrison tossed the first three innings for Winchester, striking out he first two batters he faced and finishing with five punch outs. Chamness sat down two batters in each of the final three innings for six strikeouts.

The pair got all the offense it would need from Spencer Cook and Justin Schwieterman in the first inning. Cook walked and Schwieterman singled, with both coming in to score the only runs of the contest.

Lions had no hits, but Josh Philebaum reach base twice on walks.

Graphic 8, Elks 3

Five walks led to six runs in the third inning as Graphic took control.

Anthony Chambers had a double and scored once for Graphic, and Mark Alberson and Seth VanSkyock each had a single and a run. Justin Hall scored twice.

Nate Markle notched three singles and scored one run for Elks.

Pak-A-Sak 20, Vance 9

Skyler Petty racked up four hits to lead Pak-A-Sak. He was also the winning pitcher.

Mat Taylor and Nathan Frisch each had a couple of hits for Vance.

Inman 15, MainSource 8

Matthew Landfair knocked four hits in the Inman victory. Austin Mann took the mound for the win.

Loy’s 25, Graphic 15

Danielle Wellman hit her seventh home run in the past three games Tuesday for Loy’s. She finished the game 4-for-4 with a run scored.

Lindsey Myers, Katie Simmons and Jessica Muhlenkamp each had four hits and four runs in the contest.

Emily Cline and Krista Taylor had three hits and three runs apiece for Graphic. Kelsey Louth and Katie Snyder each hit a home run.

First National 20, Tyson 11

Lexie Gierhart hit a pair of home runs and scored twice for Loy for First National. Whitney Hapner, Nikka Chaney, Brittany Miller, Courtney Smith and Hanna Lugar each had three hits and three runs.

Alexis Cook, Cheyenne Petro and Mikayala Gross each had two hits and two runs for Tyson. Mariah Hornaday hit a home run.

Swimming lessons

The first of three sessions of swimming lessons will be held at the Portland Pool beginning Monday, June 16.

The classes are for all ages, and the cost is $10 per person. There will be four different half-hour long classes each day, beginning at 9 a.m.

There will not be make-up dates for weather-related cancellations.

Registration begins Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Those interested should visit the pool or call (260) 726-6653.

Soccer notes

The sign-up period for those interested in playing on the traveling soccer team this fall is under way.

The Jay County Soccer Club will have traveling teams for ages 10-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under for both boys and girls. The deadline to register is June 18.

There will also be a Jay County Soccer Club meeting Thursday, June 19 at the Jay Community Center from 6 to 7 p.m.

SA needs coach

South Adams High School is looking for a boys soccer coach. The School Board will look to appoint a coach by its meeting July 15.

Camp rescheduled

Today’s session of the Jay County High School baseball camp was canceled because of rain. The camp will continue Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with today’s session being made up Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
