WJ track teams get by Raiders (05/03/03)

The West Jay Middle School track teams each defeated Southern Wells Wednesday.

The girls team got a couple of individual wins apiece by Trisha Champ and Morgan Locke.

Champ took first in the high jump at four feet, two inches, and won the 200-meter dash in 31.2. Morgan Locke won the 200-meter hurdles and tied for first in the shot put.

Ashley Nichols was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 20.8, Lexie Easton took the 400-meter hurdles in 1:13.8 and Sarah Garringer won the discus with a toss of 77 feet, nine inches.

The Eagles also won the 400-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay.

Chris Moore, Sean Hatzell and Ryan Sutton each had a pair of victories for the boys team.

Moore picked up his wins in the distance races, taking the 800-meter run in 2:33 and the 1600-meter run in 5:39.

Sutton was first in the 200-meter dash in 29.16, and won the long jump at 14 feet, eight inches. Hatzell was first in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:05, and was victorious in the high jump at four feet, six inches.

Also adding individual wins were Don McCowan in the hurdles (20.8), Josh Selvey in the 100-meter dash (12.74), Andy Hughes in the discus (97 feet, four inches) and Rod Berry in the shot put (31 feet, 10 inches).

West Jay’s boys also defeated Selma Tuesday, with Hatzell coming away as the only double winner. He was first in the 400-meter dash in 1:03 and the high jump at four feet, 10 inches.

Josh Selvey won the 100-meter dash in 12.4, and Ryan Sutton was first in the 200-meter dash in 26. Andy Hughes took the discus at 101 feet, and Tom Smith won the shot put at 32 feet.

Hatzell, Selvey and Moore teamed with Brandon Buckland to win the 1600-meter relay at both meets.

The girls team managed just two wins against Selma. Jessica Mosier was first in the 1600-meter run at 6:10, Garringer won the discus with a toss of 77 feet, six inches.

EJ splits with Delta

The East Jay middle school track teams took on Delta Tuesday, with the girls A team topping the Eagles 56-44 while the boys A team dropped a 69-31 decision.

The girls B team scored a 56-43 victory while the boys B team won 75-25.

Nicole Pfeifer was the big winner for the girls A team, scoring three of its four individual wins. She was first in all three dashes, taking the 100-meter dash in 14.01 and the 200-meter dash in 29.86.

East Jay did its real damage with a couple of field event sweeps. Pfeifer led one of them, taking first in the discus at 66 feet. Jami Kaufman was second, and Lacy Thornburg placed third.

Erika Hunt had the only other individual win for the Chiefs with a high jump of 4 feet, six inches. She was followed by Dana Horn and Amber Edmundson.

East Jay also took the 400-meter relay.

The boys A team’s only individual win came from Michael Jobe in the high jump at four feet, eight inches. It also won the 1600-meter relay.

The girls B team got six different individual winners in it’s victory, with Cassandra Huelskamp and Megan Adams each leading sweeps.

Huelskamp was first in the 400-meter dash in 1:10.85, and was followed by Rose Weaver and Erika Hunt. Adams took the long jump at 12 feet, three inches, and was trailed by Caitlin Dunn and Andrea Collins.

Other individual winners for East Jay were Dunn in the hurdles (19.98), Ashley Cox in the 100-meter dash (14.75), Samantha Freeman in the discus (57 feet, 11 inches) and Lauren Edmundson in the high jump (four feet). The Chiefs also took first in the 400-meter relay.

Kyle Wellman paced the boys B team with a pair of victories. He was first in the shot put at 29 feet, seven inches, and took the discus with a throw of 74 feet, 11 inches.

Luke McClung added another field event win with a leap of four feet, 11 inches in the high jump.

East Jay also owned the sprints, with Nick Martine winning the 100-meter dash in 13.95, Ben Wellman taking the 200-meter dash in 28.25 and Edwin Clott on top of the 400-meter dash in 1:07.93.

Jake Lyons was first in the hurdles with a time of 20.28, and Dustin Hall won the 1600-meter run in 5:43. The Chiefs also took the 400-meter relay.

Starfires top two

A trio of wins from Katie Weaver lifted the South Adams junior high girls track team to victories over Adams Central and Parkway Tuesday with a score of 65.5 The Jets were second at 59.5, and the Panthers were third with 11 points.

Weaver rolled to wins in a pair of sprints, taking first in the 100-meter dash in 13.2. She also finished ahead of teammate Kayla Coblentz in the 200-meter dash in 28.9.

Her third win of the evening came in the long jump as she flew 13 feet, 9.75 inches.

The other individual win for South Adams came as Haleigh Lehman led a one-two finish in the 1600-meter run. She finished in 5:42, and Maddie Moore was second in 6:17.

The Starfires were also first in the 1600-meter relay.[[In-content Ad]]
