Abbott nets hat trick in 5-0 win

HARTFORD CITY — Alex Abbott tallied his first hat trick of the season Thursday, leading the Jay County High School boys soccer team to a 5-0 win over the Blackford Bruins.
With the Patriots (2-4-1) already ahead 2-0, Abbott found the net for his first goal in the 27th minute on a pass from Lucian McIntire. Five minutes later, he notched his second goal to give Jay County a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Abbott completed his hat trick on a pass from Levi Moyer for his team-high eighth goal of the season.
Jared Schlosser opened the scoring for the Patriots four minutes into the first half, and assisted on Zaaron Lee’s second goal of the season 12 minutes later. Luke Rowles assisted on Schlosser’s goal.
Jay County’s defense held the Bruins to only three shots, with Zach Chaney stopping two of them. Nathan Hamilton prevented the other, when Chaney gave up his duties in between the pipes to play in the field.

Willis medals
WINCHESTER — South Adams junior golfer Sydney Willis tied with Winchester’s Mackenzie Mehaffey to earn match medalist honors Thursday.
Willis’ 3-over-par 39 led the Starfires (11-2) to a team score of 180 and first place at Winchester Golf Club’s Pony course.
Winchester was second with a 193, and Blackford was third with 229.
Kelli Lehman shaved three strokes off her lowest score of the season to fire a 43, a new career best mark. Jaci Gorrell had a 47 for South Adams, and Amy Schwartz turned in a 51.
Kaitlyn Gorrell also competed for the Starfires, shooting a round of 54.
Zoe Mann posted a 44 as the top score for Blackford.


Redskins top Tribe
ST. HENRY, Ohio — The Fort Recovery volleyball team fell to 1-3 in the Midwest Athletic Conference with a 25-17, 25-27, 25-16, 13-25, 15-9 loss Thursday to the St. Henry Redskins.
Kendra Siefring led the Indians (6-4) with 10 kills and eight blocks. Tori Lennartz chipped in with seven kills and three blocks, and Madi Grover had 16 digs.
Cassidy Rammel tallied 15 assists and 10 digs, and Morgan Lennartz recorded four blocks to go with her six kills.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity squad also fell to the Redskins, 25-21, 12-25, 26-24.
Grace Thien had a team-high nine kills to go along with her 12 digs. Alexis Bubp paved the way for the Tribe defense, tallying 15 digs.
Carley Stone chipped in with eight kills and eight digs

Cards down Indians
CELINA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls golf team lost is third straight conference match in a 225-235 loss Thursday to the New Bremen Cardinals at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.
Tori Vaughn shot a 53 to lead the Tribe (6-5, 1-4 MAC). Trisha Thien fired a 57, Elli Keller had a 60 and Cori Stone turned in a 65 to round out the Indians’ team score.
Sophie Timmerman (90) also competed for Fort Recovery.
