Fortkamp 11th, Jay boys ninth

HARTFORD CITY — Kellie Fortkamp crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 0.2 seconds, to place 11th to lead the Jay County girls cross country team on Monday at the Blackford Invitational.
The Patriot girls team did not qualify for a team score. Jay County’s boys squad placed ninth in the 10-team race.
Erika and Gabby Kunkler finished back-to-back in 37th and 38th place respectively, and Kay Morgan was 54th.
Teams must have five runners compete to qualify for a team score.
Tanner Craw placed 23rd in 18:28 to lead the JCHS boys. Michael Denney crossed the finish line in 38th, and Alex LeMaster was 47th. Travis Barton (53rd) and Matthew Cox (63rd) rounded out the Patriots’ team score of 224.
Dustin Bricker (64th) and Dustin Cope (67th) also competed for the Patriots.
In the junior varsity race, Dylan Harris was 39th, Sayger Holcomb finished in 62nd and Jake Nichols was 72nd.

Boys soccer shut out
LEO — Jay County’s boys soccer team was handed its worse loss of the season Monday, dropping a 9-0 decision to the Leo Lions.
It was the first time Jay County (3-5-1, 1-3 Allen County Athletic Conference) was shut out this season.
Leo jumped out to an early lead, scoring five goals in the first half. Jay County wasn’t able to stop the bleeding after halftime, as the Lions tacked on four more in the second half.
Nathan Hamilton had eight saves in goal for Jay County.


Star rally falls short
MONROEVILLE — After giving up three first-half goals to Heritage, the South Adams girls soccer team upped the pressure in the second half.
The Starfires rallied after halftime, but came up short in a 3-2 loss to the host Heritage Patriots.
Alexis Dellinger broke the shutout in the 29th minute to get the Starfires (1-5, 0-2 ACAC) within a pair of goals. Virginia Lagos found twine with 7:53 left in the game to pull South Adams within one, 3-2, but the Stars couldn’t come up with the equalizer in the game’s final minutes.
SAHS goalkeeper Jade Jauregui made seven saves.

EJMS tops AC
MONROE — Hanna Dillon tallied a dozen points from the service line, leading the East Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team to a victory over the Adams Central Jets on Monday, 25-23, 24-25, 15-11.
The seventh grade Eagles lost, 25-23, 21-25, 15-8.
Dillon also led the Eagles with five aces, and shared the team-high in assists with Kailee Denney, who also chipped in with five points.
Sarah Walter had five kills, Hannah Phillips recorded five points and three kills, and Olivia Kunkler notched eight points, two aces and two kills.
Sara Hemmelgarn had 10 points, including three aces, to lead the seventh grade Eagles. Britney Mulins, Logan Poore and Macey Weitzel each added six points. Elyse Bost added four kills and three digs.
