Starfire golfers finish second

DECATUR — Sydney Willis shot a 39 on Wednesday at Cross Creek Golf Club, leading the South Adams High School girls golf team to a second-place finish.
The Starfires shot a 180, nine strokes behind the first-place Bellmont Squaws. The Adams Central Jets were third with 226.
Willis’ 39 was good enough to earn match medalist honors for the 12th time this season.
Alleigh Wingler followed Willis with a 45, and Kelli Lehman had a 47. Jaci Gorrell rounded out the Starfires’ team score with a 49. Amy Schwartz (52) also competed for South Adams.

Braves top Stars
BERNE — Dexter Miller picked up the only win for the Starfire boys tennis team in its 4-1 loss to the Bellmont Braves on Wednesday.
Miller beat Austin O’Campo 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, as South Adams fell to 9-5 on the season.
At No. 1 singles, Evan Selking of Bellmont beat David Muselman 6-1, 6-2, and Robby Ysidron was victorious over Bret Litwiller at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
The South Adams No. 1 doubles team of Jared Grabau and Cole Myers lost to Logan Baker and Ryan Okoniewski 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Bellmont’s Ben Fullenkamp and Conner Hess beat Marcus Teeter and Kam DeLong, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
South Adams’ junior varsity team also lost, 6-1.
Cody Baker and Jamison Kistler defeated Zach Myers and Jon Sweeney 6-4 at No. 3 doubles for the Starfires’ only win.

EJ boys, girls win
MONROEVILLE — The East Jay Middle School boys and girls cross country teams earned a pair of victories on Tuesday at Heritage.
The EJMS girls beat the Heritage Patriots 16-43 and the West Jay Eagles 21-41. The Chief girls topped the Patriots 15-50, and the Eagles 18-43.
West Jay’s boys beat Heritage 15-50, and the girls lost to the Patriots 26-33.
East Jay’s Kendra Muhlenkamp was the overall winner in the girls race. Following her were Miranda Alig (second), Cheyenne Liette (fifth), Kristy Alig (sixth) and Klarissa Hemmelgarn (eighth).
Sophie Fugiett led the Eagles with a third place finish. Lexus Harding placed third, Lilly Clemmons was 13th, Catherine Stafford finished 19th and Jade Roser was 27th.
Skylar Myers of East Jay placed first in the boys race, ahead of Taylor Smeltzer (second), Mason Winner (fourth), Brayden Sprunger (fifth) and Xavier Meyers (sixth).
Daniel Fugiett and Matthew Paquette were third and seventh respectively for WJMS. Ian McCombs (12th), Dallas Workman (21st) and Logan Brown (22nd) rounded out WJMS’ top five runners.
