Starfire golfers make history

BLUFFTON — For the first time in school history, South Adams advanced to regional as a team in girls golf.
Sydney Willis shot a 6-over-par 78 to lead the Starfires to a third-place finish in the Norwell sectional at Timber Ridge Golf Course in Bluffton.
South Adams had a 364, five strokes behind second-place Homestead and four ahead of fourth-place Canterbury.
Bellmont edged Homestead by one stroke to take the sectional title with a 359.
Willis, who turned in the No. 2 overall score behind Amber Nelson of Norwell, had three birdies and made par three times on the front nine, making the turn with a 1-over 37.
Jaci Gorrell followed Willis with a 92, and Alleigh Wingler and Kelli Lehman finished back-to-back with a 97 and 98 respectively.
Amy Schwartz also competed for South Adams, shooting a 105.

SA sweep invite
BERNE — The South Adams boys and girls cross country teams placed first Saturday in the invitational they hosted.
The Starfire boys scored 43 points to take the top spot, and the girls won with a 37.
Bailey McIntire and Sawyer Miller placed first and second respectively for South Adams.
McIntire had a time of 16 minutes, 28.94 seconds. David Steffen placed fourth, Cole Litwiller was 13th and Briar Goodwin was 24th.
Olivia Von Gunten was the overall winner in the girls race with a time of 20:15.94. Kara Seffernick was two spots behind her in third, and Aleesha Goodwin was sixth.
Hadi Hawbaker and Katelin Hawbaker closed out the Starfire team score, placing 13th and 14th respectively.

Fort boys third
CELINA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery boys golf team placed third Saturday in the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament.
The Indians had a team score of 354 at Mercer County Elks Golf Club, behind tournament champion Minster Wildcats (327) and the Versailles Tigers (340).
Fort Recovery’s girls team placed fourth with a 424 at Stillwater Valley Golf Club in Versailles. The Tigers won the tournament with a 369, Minster had a 414 for second and the St. Henry Redskins were third with 417.
Chase Bruns led the Indians with an 86, placing eighth overall. Derek Backs and Jackson Hobbs both turned in scores of 88, and Nick Litmer rounded out the team score with a 92.
Cole Wendel (111) and Micaiah Cox (disqualified) also competed for the Tribe.
Trisha Thien turned in the top score for the Tribe girls with a 101. Tori Vaughn shot a 105, and Cori Stone and Emily Bruns tied with 109. Also competing for the Indians were Elli Keller (128) and Sophie Timmerman (154).
With their scores in the conference tournament, Chase Bruns, Backs, Vaughn and Thien earned all-MAC first team honors.
Hobbs and Stone were both named to the second-team, with Emily Bruns and Litmer getting honorable mention.
