Museum hosting Christmas events

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Following a very successful Heritage Festival, supported by many generous donors, including The Portland Foundation, Jay County Historical Society is embarking on its next large event for the community. “Christmas at the Museum” begins with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

More than 20 decorated trees, as well as other decorations, are scattered throughout the museum. The following local groups have decorated 17 of those trees: Jay County Hospital, Pregnancy Care Center, Mayor Randy and Carol Geeseman for the City of Portland, Madison Tomcats, Jayland Partners, 2nd Chance at Life Ministries, Jay County Humane Society, the Mississinewa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Jay Community Center senior programming, John Jay Center for Learning, Kiwanis Club of Portland, Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association, Jay County Homemakers Extension Club, Crown Pointe, Persimmon Ridge Rehabilitation Centre, Jay County Solid Waste Management District and Jay County Christian Academy. Other trees were decorated by museum volunteers.

The next special event will be “Museum Candlelight Tours” on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. Stop by the museum to get warm following the Parade of Lights that evening. This is a time to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere at the museum, with lighting provided by Christmas lights and electric candles. Special entertainment will be by the Thien Snipps from Fort Recovery, and Eric Rogers and piano students from Arts Place will be playing the 1860s piano. Special refreshments will be served.

On Sunday, Dec. 10, “Family Day” will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be new activities and crafts, a scavenger hunt, carols with Collin Kreigbaum at the 1860s piano, pictures with Santa and refreshments.

The final weekend open house will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. Visitors are also welcome to view the trees on Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through December.

Admission to the museum is free, but guests are encouraged to bring donations for Jay County Humane Society. They need items such as dog and cat food, treats, toys, cat litter, Pine Sol, washing machine detergent and clean, used bath or hand towels. A jar for monetary donations for them will also be available.

We encourage you to attend these events as the historical society once again gives back to the entire Jayland community.

Thank you,

Larry Hiatt and Kay Locker
