Lack of action is American tragedy

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

We are living an American tragedy.

Seventeen young souls have breathed their last.

The politicians repeat, again, this is not the time.

When is the time?

People will offer thoughts and prayers, just like after the last mass shooting. Thoughts and prayers did nothing to give these 17 young souls a chance. It did not protect them from the lethal lead projected from a gun made for nothing less than killing.

We are living an American tragedy.

Seventeen mothers and father have been told the news, their child is not coming home. The people who have the power to change this from happening again still have not grown a spine.

When is it to the point of being enough? When your child is killed? When your neighbor’s child is killed? Your wife or your husband?

Are we truly pro-life if we are not outraged by this too oft-repeated scenario?

We mourn, as we should, the brave men and women who give their lives for their country. Do we deem the lives lost to gun violence less precious?

When we do nothing that is exactly what we are saying.

Do we really comfort a grieving parent or spouse, a brother or sister by offering our thoughts and prayers?

There is a verse in the new testament, in the book of James: “Faith without works is dead.” Thoughts and prayers do not stop the bullets. Waiting to have a much needed conversation about gun violence, does not stop the bullets.

We are living an American tragedy.

Nothing will change until the American people stand in unison and say: “Enough!”

The real tragedy in this latest episode of gun carnage? In a week it will be forgotten, except for those 17 mothers and fathers whose child is never coming home again.

They will never again get to hear their laughter. They will never again get to kiss their child good night. They will never again get to hear the words, “I love you Mom, I love you Dad.”

They will never again enjoy the fruits of parenthood, because we will choose once again, to do nothing, and that is indeed, an American tragedy.
