Cookie process leads to questions

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Girl Scout Cookie time has been upon us for a while now, and believe me it inolves a mass amount of females.

More than a month ago, I couldn’t find anyone selling the cookies. I called our local radio station’s second-hand store. I asked that a participant contact me so that I could purchase their product. In no time at all, my phone line lit up like a Christmas tree with willing sellers of the famous cookies.

I know that I am not alone in realizing the event could be used as a valuable learning experience for young ladies. Also, I can certainly understand that mothers and grandmothers want to help. However, it is disappointing to see them do virtually everything regarding the selling of the cookies.

During my purchases, I couldn’t help but notice many Girl Scouts who are not at all included in transactions. Many mothers and grandmothers do it all. It has caused me to wonder just how much the girls are learning.

I recently tried to pay a Girl Scout for cookies. Her mother took over and stated that she wanted to make sure the correct payment and the exact right amount of change were made. It causes me to wonder if the girls receive that kind of “help” with their homework from school, also.
