Anti-gun efforts are built on lies
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Michael Kinser, in his letter to the editor, warned me that “It is not a good idea … to label your debate opponent a liar right out of the gate.”
In most cases I would agree, but the anti-gun crowd has been literally running a 50-year campaign based on lies.
They said that the Saturday Night Special bill would only ban cheap, easily concealed handguns, but it miraculously targeted quality expensive revolvers by Colt and Smith and Wesson.
The Cop Killer Bullet Ban was another lie.
For a year Joe Biden was all over the airwaves claiming that the Glock was an all plastic terrorist handgun that was only good for hijacking airplanes. No Glock has ever hijacked an airplane and the gun is now the most popular law enforcement handgun in the country.
The anti-gun networks were showing video of machine guns while Biden, Chuck Schumer and Diane Feinstein told us that semi-auto AK rifles were the weapon of choice of drug dealers. This was the point where the major networks discovered they could get away with fake news.
In fact, AKs were rarely used in crime, but the lie won and the bill passed after so many had been imported that the market was glutted, prices dropped by 60 percent and 10 years later you could still buy an AK in any gun store for less than it cost in 1992. The number of AKs and ARs in the country were more than doubled but in 2004 the gun banners were screaming that there would be a blood bath if they were put back on the street. There was none when the so-called ban expired.
Hillary Clinton said she didn’t want to ban guns, but in the Senate she supported and/or co-sponsored every gun ban scheme that was introduced. Her presidential web site gun control page was one big lie. My favorite was her claim that she would make it a federal crime to buy a gun and sell it to a felon. In fact, it is already three federal crimes each punishable by 10 years per gun.
A majority of people wanted expanded background checks, but Schumer would not remove federal gun owner registration from the bill while the anti-gun media tried to claim it wasn’t there.
Now we are told that AR style rifles are Military Grade Weapons that are only good for killing people. In fact, they are excellent for hunting, competition and defense. With well less than 300 used in murders a year, the other 15 million ARs clearly must be used for something else.
The “Assault Weapon” bills try to claim that an adjustable stock, pistol grip or a heat shield somehow make a gun evil. This is another lie.
You can’t have a reasonable conversation with a liar until the lies are exposed.
Jennifer Rubin’s Saturday antigun rant adds more lies. She starts by saying “gun safety advocates,” but these groups have nothing to do with actual gun safety. They are the same old gun control groups that changed their names because gun control doesn’t poll well.
She says that “the NRA — not its opponents — was losing at the ballot box” while the gun ban was in effect. It was Bill Clinton who admitted that the Assault Weapon Ban cost Democrats control of congress.
She talks about the NRA’s noxious political influence making changes in the law possible. She is wrong. The NRA’s power is in providing the countries 100 million gun owners with the truth about congressional voting records and the contents of gun control laws. The truth will determine the outcome.
