FORT WAYNE — It’s all about the tournaments now.
Jay County High School’s wrestling team closed its dual-match season with a 38-32 loss Thursday to the host Homestead Spartans.
Four of the Patriots’ six wins came by pins, including one from third-ranked 182-pounder Mason Winner in 1 minute, 35 seconds, but it was not enough.
Camron Gage (138), Blake Pruett (152) and Braden McIntire (220) picked up the other pins for Jay County, which was coming off of a win Tuesday over Lapel. Ethan Reilly (113) and Zakk Atkins (120) each turned in major decision victories with scores of 12-3 and 10-2, respectively.
Jay County will compete Jan. 24 in the Allen County Athletic Conference Tournament at Bluffton before hosting the sectional tournament Feb. 1.
EJ boys split
East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team rallied Thursday night for a 37-34 win over visiting Heritage. The seventh graders lost 29-28.
Sam Myers tallied 16 points to lead the eighth grade Chiefs (4-6, 2-3 Allen County Athletic Conference) to their win. Abraham Dirksen and Simon Pryor each had eight points.
Levi Muhlenkamp and Eli Dirksen each finished with eight points for the EJMS seventh grade squad (2-9, 1-4 ACAC). Brenden Runyon added five points.
Chiefs cruise
MONROEVILLE — A dozen players scored for the East Jay Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team Thursday as it dominated the host Heritage Patriots 35-7.
Danielle May’s six points led the long list of scorers for the Chiefs (9-2). Sophie Saxman, Bralee VanSkyock and Layliana ElDeeb each added four, and Breanna Dirksen scored three.
Finishing with two points each were Meredith Dirksen, Jenna Dues, Savanna Lugar, Cassie Petro, Hannah Laux, Cash Hollowell and Molly Muhlenkamp.
