UNION CITY - The first quarter buried the Starfires.
South Adams High School's girls basketball team gave up 20 first-quarter points Monday on the way to a 45-33 loss to the Union City Indians.
SAHS outscored the Indians over the final three quarters, but couldn't overcome its 16-point, first-quarter deficit.
Ashton Morgan had 10 points in the loss for the Starfires. Karen Bollenbacher followed with eight, and Tori Kistler scored seven.
Lani Allen and Chantle Candy reached double figures for Union City with 14 and 12 points respectively. Lindsey Bird added eight points.
South Adams lost the junior varsity game 15-6 with Lyndsey Chandler scoring four points.
Delta tops freshmen
The Jay County High School boys basketball team fell behind by eight in the first quarter Monday and fell 28-19 to the visiting Delta Eagles.
Dillon Ainsworth hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter and finished with 12 points for the Patriots. Matt Landfair scored all of his five points in the second half.
Raiders defeat SA
The South Adams Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team fell 27-20 Monday to Southern Wells.
Bryanna Graat scored half of the Starfires' points and also grabbed 14 rebounds. Tori Smith added six points.
WJ eighth wins
DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's eighth grade boys basketball team rolled to a 39-24 victory Monday over Hartford City. The seventh grade Eagles lost, 30-19.
Tyler Back scored 13 points for the WJMS eighth graders. Blake Crouch added 12 points, and Jason Farmer scored six.
Kyle Selvey scored all but five of the points for the Eagle seventh grade team. Toby McCalister and Blake Bennett each chipped in two points.
Starfire wrestlers dominate
DALEVILLE - South Adams High School's wrestling team opened with a near-perfect day at the Daleville Bronco Invite.
The Starfires finished first in the tournament, dominating all of its matches and bringing home 10 individual titles. They defeated the host Broncos 74-3 in the championship match following wins of 72-9 over Northeastern, 78-6 over Monroe Central and 62-12 over Indianapolis Manual.
South Adams took championships in each of the six lightest weight classes, with Todd Batt (103), Gabe Sprunger (112), Cajon Dailey (119), John Striker (125), Jordan Landers (130) and Josh Ehr (135) all posting perfect 4-0 records. Jim West (HWT), Jackson Werst (215), Chase Sprunger (152) and T.J. Burnfield (145) also went 4-0 to win their respective weight classes.
Bader leads tankers
FORT WAYNE - Sophie Bader picked up the lone victory for the Jay County Winter Swim Team as it competed this weekend at the Southwest Allen County Splash Autumn Invitational.
Bader, swimming in her final meet in the 9-10-year-old division, took first place in the 500-yard freestyle. She was second in seven events and third in the other two to earn high-point honors.
James Keen placed third in three events in the 11-12-year-old boys division. In the 9-10-year-old girls division Jay County got third-place finishes from Alex Bader in the 50 butterfly, Sidney Sprunger in the 50 backstroke and Cori Stone in the 100 butterfly.
Others placing in the top 10 in at least one event were Cady Farlow, Anna Nussbaum and Anne Vormohr.
