3-point record broken in loss (12/12/05)

JCHS girls basketball

ANDERSON — Cassandra Huelskamp was on fire.

She nearly doubled her career-high scoring total.

She matched Anderson Highland’s Raven Ivey shot for shot.

She made a 3-pointer in every quarter to break a school record.

But all of that still left Jay County’s girls basketball team on the short end as it fell 75-64 to the much-improved host Scots.

Huelskamp, a sophomore, torched Anderson Highland, erasing four names from the Patriot record book in the process. She nailed three first-quarter 3-pointers, added one in the second quarter, two more in the third and one in the fourth.

Her seven triples are the most in school history, topping the previous record of six most recently accomplished by Natalie Hosier in 2002. Others who shared the record were Carissa Phillips, April Hines and Cassie Golden.

Huelskamp scored 25 points when her previous best was 13 in this season’s win over Winchester. However, Ivey also scored 25 points as the Scots ended their skid against their Olympic Athletic Conference rivals.

Highland, which had lost to Jay County by double digits in each of the last three seasons, scored almost at will as it put up 45 second-half points. The Patriots, who trailed just 30-28 at halftime, hadn’t allowed more than 47 total points in their previous five games.

The Scots (5-4, 2-0 OAC) took the win from the foul line where they finished 20-of-27. Jay County shot just 16 free throws, making nine, to account for the 11-point final margin.

Kasey Herrington, who went 6-of-6 from the field, followed Ivey with 19 points for the Scots. Kyla Lacy had 11 points, Erin Looper and Stormy Holder each scored seven and Nikki Scott had six.

Sara Garringer supported Huelskamp’s effort for the Patriots with 18 points. She also had team highs of seven assists and six rebounds, but no other Jay County player reached double figures in the high-scoring affair.

Theresa Reinhart finished with seven points, and Chelsea DeBoy had six.

Junior varsity

Jay County (8-2) rolled to victory over the Scots, getting three players in double figures in a 56-30 win.

Amber Edmundson paced the Patriots with 13 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds.

Gina Muhlenkamp drained four 3-pointers for 12 points, and Sharon Dirksen added 10 points. Kaelee Keller dished out seven assists.

Freshman

The Patriots pushed to a 10-point lead after one quarter and were never challenged in a 43-20 victory over Anderson Highland.

Jay County (4-3) pushed the lead to 15 points at halftime. It led by double digits the entire second half.

Chelsea Grady scored 12 points to lead the Patriots. Mackenzie Loy had nine points, and Kristi Morningstar finished with eight points and six rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
