4-H project judging workshop to be held
Taking Note
Anyone interested in becoming a judge for 4-H projects at area fairs is invited to attend the Northeast Indiana 4-H Judges Worshop.
The workshop will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 8611 Mayhew Road in Fort Wayne.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and a general session explaining the philosophy of judging 4-H projects, working with youth during the judging process and understanding project rules begins at 9 a.m. and end at 12:15 p.m. Breakout seessions will follow.
The cost is $10 and registrations are due by Friday, Oct. 30. For more information, contact Cara Kobza at Purdue Extension in Jay County at (260) 726-4707 or [email protected].
Suicide program
Meridian Services in Portland will host a free program on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Jay County Public Library Community Room.
"Suicide Warning Signs and How To Help" will be presented at noon. Bring a sack lunch to eat during the program. For more information, call (260) 726-9348 or visit www.meridiansc.org.
Citizen award
Chris Hartman, a teacher at Southern Wells for the past 26 years, was recently honored with the Distinguished Citizen Award.
She was chosen by the students at Southern Wells Jr./Sr. High School where she is technology coordinator and teaches junior high computers and pre-algebra.
Hartman is a 1979 graduate of Jay County High School and the daughter of Dale and Alice Pearson of Portland.
She lives in the Southern Wells area with her husband Ray.

Several area residents recently attended a Tri Kappa Worshop.
Attending from Portland Beta Theta were Jodi McKee, president; Heather Hedges, vice president; Christy Manor, treasurer; Lori DeRome, recording secretary; and Deb Tipton, scholarships.
