A perfect fall day with mom

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

What a terrific week! My pictures finally came back from the developer. The images were great, even the ones where people are making faces. My week continued to get better and better.
My mom’s refrigerator went on the fritz. My brother, Michael, stopped by and couldn’t fix it so it was time to go shopping. I stopped on the way to her house and found one in a price range we could afford. But when I talked to the helpful guy at the store, he informed me that price was wrong.
It seems there was a sale going on, and the cost would actually be lower. When I remarked that his name, Jabbar, reminded me of Lew Alcindor, he grinned. He said that was who he was named after because his mom had a crush on the basketball player. He went on to say that he never played basketball himself because he was too wide. He played football instead.
I also stopped at the store where Mom had told me she bought her last refrigerator. They no longer sold appliances, but they were having a great sale on furniture. They thought the old bowling alley might sell appliances, but they weren’t sure.
Once at Mom’s I checked the phone book, but there weren’t any more appliance stores in the area. So we went back to the first place. I showed her the one I chose, and she determined that it would be suitable. We soon had another surprise when we found that it had been marked down since that morning. All told, we paid more than $100 less than the original price. We were in a very good mood when we left for home.
It was a beautiful day. At one point Mom asked, “What is that smell?” It was the wonderful, spicy scent of fall. The aroma of fields being harvested, fruits and vegetables past their primes and fall flowers all combined to fill the air with fragrance. The intensely blue sky brushed with wispy clouds was the perfect compliment to the delicious perfume.
She wanted to get some bird seed so we stopped in town. As usual, she got a lot more than just bird seed. I have a bag that hangs on the back of her wheelchair. I put my purse in it. It is easier to push the chair if I am not juggling a purse at the same time. But it doesn’t leave room for very many purchases. Maybe I should buy a second bag or a smaller purse as she seldom limits her choices to just one or two items.
Two days later I went back to Mom’s for the delivery of the refrigerator. I cleaned out the old fridge and found a dime underneath it. Then I painted her outside door casings. I found the hedge trimmers and decided to trim her shrubs. But I couldn’t find the extension cord.
I called my brother, David, to see if he had one. I got his voicemail. His new phone sends everything directly to voicemail instead of ringing. He called back and said that every time he leaves the extension cord there, it disappears. He would be right over.
He pulled up a minute or two after the delivery truck. He thanked me for calling. Apparently his wife and son had gotten into some kind of disagreement, and David was more than happy for an excuse to escape the drama.
The delivery guys were wonderful. They removed the old fridge and installed the new one. We had most of the shrubs trimmed by the time they finished. I refilled the fridge and David left to see if the rest of his family had calmed down.
There are so many days when things go wrong that when there comes a day when everything goes right it seems like such a blessing.
I had not one, but two, perfect days last week. I hope your week is going well, and that you will have your own perfect days to tell about.
