AC bounces Starfires from tourney (02/08/06)
Sectional girls basketball
BLUFFTON — The Jets waited until the tournament, and then turned the tables.
South Adams scored the last of its three regular-season wins by clobbering the Adams Central Jets just two weeks ago. But the Starfires could not duplicate the effort Tuesday, falling 60-40 to Adams Central in the first round of the Class 2A girls basketball sectional at Bluffton.
In the other first-round game at Bluffton, Woodlan stunned ninth-ranked Heritage 42-39.
Adams Central (3-17) dominated the opening two quarters, taking a 19-11 lead after the first eight minutes. It pushed the advantage to 18 points at the half and was never challenged.
Jamie Schwartz turned in an outstanding first half to lead the Jets, scoring 14 of her 16 points before the break. Ashley Manley had the team high of 17 points, and Natalie Yoder finished with seven.
South Adams lost mostly thanks to its 25 turnovers and an inability to keep up with the Jets on the glass. Adams Central grabbed 21 more rebounds than the Starfires — 52-31 — which resulted in 28 more field goal attempts for the winning team.
Erin McCollum was the lone South Adams player to reach double figures as she scored 11 points. She also had three assists and two blocks.
Julie Muhlenkamp had eight points and three rebounds, and Holly Kaup added six points and three boards. Bethany Balsiger and Jordan Lehman each grabbed six boards, and Allie Liechty added three assists.
The Starfires finished the season at 3-16.

In Class 3A sectional action at Mississinewa Tuesday, favored Elwood rolled to a 67-26 victory over Tipton. Blackford also advanced, needing overtime to get past Delta 59-53.
