Activities planned at library (10/8/03)

Taking note

The Jay County Public Library, Portland, is hosting several programs and activities for all, during the month of October.

• Story Times — Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21 — Mondays at 11:15 a.m. and Tuesdays at 1 p.m. Infants and up are welcome to attend when accompianed by an adult.

• Teen Advisory Board, second organizational meeting — Tuesday, Oct. 14, 6:30-8 p.m. Seventh to 12th grade only. No registration is necessary. Teens will discuss programs to plan in the upcoming months and book reviews and other topics will be discussed. Refreshments will be served.

• Teen Advisory Board, second organizational meeting — Tuesday, Oct. 18, 3-4:30 p.m. Seventh to 12th grade only. No registration is necessary. Teens will discuss programs to plan in the upcoming months and book reviews and other topics will be discussed. Refreshments will be served.

• Haunted Gingerbread Houses — Wednesday, Oct. 22, 7-8 p.m. For seventh to 12th grades only. Decorate a graham cracker house using Halloween decorations to make it scary. Refreshments will be served. Registration required.

• Teen Read Week — Oct. 19-25 — Seventh to 12th grades only. Guess who the slammers are on the board and win prizes.

• Pumpkin Craft Special — Monday, Oct. 27, 2:45-4 p.m. Preschool (with adult) through sixth grade. Bring your own pumpkin to decorate with the library’s supplies. No registration necessary.

• Storyteller, Wanda Lou Willis — Tuesday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. For all ages. Some scary and not-so-scary stories will be shared with refreshments.

• After School Craft Event — Wednesday, Oct. 29, noon to 1:30 p.m. Grades four, five and six only. Craft projects for kids in a supervised environment. Refreshments will be served. Registration required.

• Halloween Story Time — Friday, Oct. 31, 11 a.m. Infants through third grade are invited to attend in costume when accompianed by an adult.

• October Reading Program — Preschool through elementary age children. Read books to earn Book Bucks for the Scholastic Book Fair.

• Scholastic Book Fair — Oct. 28-Nov. 1 — New books available for purchase during the week. Hours are Tuesday, 5-6:30 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. Earned Book Bucks can be redeemed for a dollar’s worth of merchandise.

• Pumpkin Contest — A contest for children of all ages. Bring a decorated pumpkin to the library by Oct. 29. Winners will be announced on Halloween and pumpkins can be picked up at that time.

OKTOBERFEST

The Jay County High School German Club is hosting its annual Oktoberfest in the south hallway of the high school on Friday, Oct. 10, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

German foods such as bratwurst, potato salad, Black Forest cake and apple struedel will be served along with German music, a cultural display and more. Admission is free.

GRADUATE

Elizabeth M. Theurer, daughter of Michael and Denice Theurer, Fort Recovery, recently graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio. She received a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology studies.

While on campus, she was active in Beta Beta Beta biology honorary; the Professional Association of Women in Science; pep band; the Newman Club; Unlimited Sharing Deputation Team; Northern Christian Fellowship; marching band; the women’s golf team; Habitat for Humanity; and the student senate.

She was a graduate of Jay County High School.

PROGRAM

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and Jay County Hospital are hosting a program entitled, Small Steps: Cradle to Kindergarten & Protect Your Unborn with Folic Acid, on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 7-8 p.m. in conference room A at the hospital.

Bonnie Coons, consumer and family science educator, will provide steps that can make the difference between readiness to learn and the struggle to catch up when entering kindergarten.

Lori Snyder of Purdue will discuss the effects of folic acid on neural tube birth defects.

Another program hosted by the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Jay County Public Library, Portland.

Gadgets and Tools for Independent Living will be presented by Cathy Burkett, former consumer and family science educator from Rushville. A program about thingamajigs and whatchamacallits that come in handy as people age and sensory changes occur.
