Adams dealing with CFS

Business Roundup

A Portland company may help Adams County offices get a fiber-optic phone line.
Adams County Council and IT Director Landen Patterson met to discuss a possible deal between the county and Portland-based firm Community Fiber Solutions (CFS). It would require an additional appropriation of approximately $92,000 to cover the initial cost of installing the fiber.
Patterson said the deal would save Adams County about $3,000 a month in phone service.
Council members asked Patterson to look into entering an extended, possible 5- to 7-year, contract with CFS instead of a three-year contract.
Patterson will then present Mark Burry, Adams County attorney, with the contract to be reviewed. If he approves, Patterson will ask for the additional appropriations from council.

Car wash
Two Jay County car washes raised a total of $1,071 for local food pantries.
Portland’s Super Wash raised $724 and Dunkirk’s location earned $347 for local food pantries in May.
Super Wash car washes across the country participated in and raised $66,500 its annual Food Raiser.

Health assessment
Health officials asked Mercer County Commissioners to set aside funds annually for future community health assessments last week.
Local health department administrator Dale Palmer, Mercer Health CEO Paula Detterman and Gateway Outreach Center Executive Director Teresa Smith told commissioners a health assessment is overdue.
The estimated cost for the proposed assessment and strategic plan is $25,000. Sixty percent of it must be paid upfront.
The last assessment was in 2006 and didn’t include a strategic plan. It cost $7,400 and was paid for by the board of commissioners, the health department, COLT Transportation System, Job and Family Services and Mercer County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Palmer said the last assessment lacked strategy and action steps. A community health assessment identifies problems such as obesity, tobacco and alcohol use and mental issues around the county. The strategic plan would help combat those issues.
A strategic plan can also make it easier for agencies to obtain grants to fund training, counseling and prevention for specific problems within communities.

Fewer cattle
Widespread drought has contributed to the nation’s decline in cattle. The United States has the smallest cattle head count in at least 40 years.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported last week that the number of cattle and calves in the country decreased by 2 percent in the last year. Beef cattle numbers were down 3 percent and dairy cow numbers were unchanged at 9.2 million head counted.
It’s the smallest cattle inventory since NASS began a July count in 1973.
