Adult choir planned (02/18/2009)

Arts Place will be holding auditions for a new adult choir, for those ages 15 and older, as part of its MusicWorks program.

The auditions will take place on March 3 at 7 p.m. and Linda Rodden will be the voice instructor.

The choir will begin meeting on Tuesday, March 31 from 7 to 8:45 p.m. and continue through May. The choir will perform one piece at the MusicWorks Ensemble Concert on May 8 and a full concert on May 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Art exhibit

The 2009 Regional Student Art Show "I Have a Story to Tell" to feature artwork by area students, will be held at Arts Place March 13 through May 2 .

A reception to recognize students and instructors will be held on Friday, March 13 from 3 to 6 p.m. The public is welcome.

Teacher of year

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is seeking nominations for its annual Indiana History Teacher of the Year Award.

The winner will receive a $1,000 honorarium and be considered for the National History Teacher of the Year. The school's library will also receive a core archive of history books and materials.

Bloomfield winners

Bloomfield Elementary School recently held its spelling bee and oratorical contest.

The winner was Dakota Brunswick, the daughter of Alan and Patty Brunswick of Bryant.

The runner-up was Brett Laux, the son of Ed and Valerie Laux, Bryant.

Brunswick will represent the school at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie on March 7.

The oratorical contest winner was Megan Wellman, the daughter of Ed and Linda Wellman, Bryant. She also represented Bloomfield in the Optimist Oratorical Contest held at Jay Christian Academy.

To participate

The Portland Foundation has been selected to participate in the Community of Effective Practice Pilot Project.

The focus of the project is to strengthen the ethical and operational standards for Indiana Community Foundations and to provide a plan for continuous improvement for community foundations.

The Portland Foundation is one of seven community foundations chosen in Indiana. The project will take two years to complete.

Winner correction

Students of the Month for January at West Jay Middle School were named in Tuesday's Taking Note column.

The eighth grade winner was Shelby Wendel, the son of Chad and Jennifer Wendel.[[In-content Ad]]
