Allen earns BSU scholarship (5/13/05)

Jay County High School senior Tasha L. Allen has received the Ball State University Distinction Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship was awarded based on academic preparation and performance.
Tasha is the daughter of Rebecca L. Allen, Portland.
BSU students
Area students attending Ball State University in Muncie have received scholarships for continued education.
Jessica McBride received the Zeberl Family Scholarship and the Elizabeth A. Nielson and George H. Nielson scholarship. She is pursuing a master’s degree in health science and is the daughter of Genevieve McBride, Portland, and Greg McBride, Colorado.
Beth Muhlenkamp also received the Zeberl Family Scholarship. She is majoring in health science and minoring in public health and interpersonal relations. Her parents are Ed and Barb Muhlenkamp, Portland.
Joshua Gibson received the Warren E. Schaller Scholarship. He is pursuing a masters degree in health science. He was also inducted and elected vice-president of Eta Sigma Gamma chapter of Ball State University. He is the son of Rick Gibson and Cheryl Geesaman, both of Portland.
Mona Wenger, Dunkirk, will be a graduate assistant at Ball State University. She is pursuing a master’s degree in health science.
She has also been inducted into the Alpha Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma at Ball State University.
Open house
The Jay County Historical Museum will have an open house on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. in conjunction with Jay County Historic Preservation Week.
Ralph May will have a display about the lighting of rural Jay County.
The museum will also be open extra hours for visitors of the Swap Meet at the fairgrounds. The hours are Monday through Sunday, May 22, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Receive degrees
Two Portland students recently graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion. Amber Jewell Alberson and Michael Allen Hosier both received a bachelor’s degree in management.
Minnetrista events
The following workshops will be available at Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie.
Canning spicy pickled beets will be on Sunday, May 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. Learn a recipe that will improve the image of this minunderstood root vegetable and can a jar of your own. The cost is $10 and reservation deadline is Sunday, May 15.
Children ages four and five are invited to learn about growing vegetables and will visit the Children’s Garden on Tuesday, May 17, from 9 to 10 a.m. or 4 to 5 p.m. The cost is $2.
Bring your 3-year-old to plant seeds on Tuesday, May 24, from 9 to 10 a.m. or 4 to 5 p.m. The cost is $2 and registration deadline is Tuesday, May 17.
The following garden programs for adults are available.
A garden heritage tour of Oakhurst Gardens and the Children’s Garden will be on Sunday, May 22, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $5 and registration deadline is Sunday, May 15.
Learn about the importance of composting on Friday, May 27, from 4 to 5 p.m. The cost is $5 and registration deadline is Friday, May 20.
A garden heritage tour of the gardens near Minnetrista, Minnetrista Orchard Shop and the Nature Area will be Thursday, May 26, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $5 and registration deadline is Thursday, May 19.
A garden planting workshop will be Saturday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to noon to learn the basics of planting a garden. The cost is $2 and registration deadline is Saturday, May 21.

A program to tutor students struggling in reading is being offered this summer by Ball State University’s Reading Programs and Services.
The program is for second through seventh grade students whose reading levels are at least one year below their grade level.
The classes are being offered Monday through Thursday at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. from June 14 through July 14. Students may enroll in one hour long class.
