An image to remember (6/28/04)
Opinion
The image lingers.
Perhaps it will never go away.
Searching in darkness, a line of volunteers stood shoulder to shoulder last week, stretching more than a quarter of a mile.
It’s difficult to conceive of a more powerful image of humanity, volunteerism, and community than that line of anonymous individuals giving of their time and energy in search of a lost child.
Something wonderful happened last week in Jay County.
We were going to say that something “remarkable” happened. But it wasn’t remarkable, it was to be expected. It’s simply what happens when strong communities pull together.
But it was wonderful just the same, a reminder of the good to be found in the hearts of our neighbors — friends and strangers alike — when a child is lost in the dark.
And as the image lingers, it’s worth pondering how much we all depend, every day, on those folks prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with us in an hour of need. — J.R.
