Anheuser-Busch deal sparks speculation (07/19/2008)
Business roundup
In the wake of Anheuser-Busch's $52 billion deal with InBev SA, there's some speculation the thrifty Belgium-based company could slash some of the sports sponsorship and advertising deals that have made Anheuser-Busch brands a fixture in stadiums, living rooms and refrigerators across the country, according to The Associated Press.
"There's nervousness out there, and it's palpable," Eric Shepard, executive editor for Beer Marketer's Insights, a trade magazine, told The AP this week.
Anheuser-Busch is a huge customer of Dunkirk's St. Gobain Container plant, which produces millions of longneck beer bottles for Budweiser.
While InBev, whose corporate leaders opt to fly in economy rather than first class, tends to make money by finding ways to cut costs, experts don't think it would be wise to pull out of a sports market Anheuser-Busch has dominated for years.
"If they decide to go in a different direction, they could be playing with fire with the brand's long-term success," said Steve Solomon, a former TV executive who now helps run a New York-based sports entertainment company.
Anheuser-Busch has been quiet since the deal was announced earlier this week. Budweiser invests heavily on advertising during NFL games and ran seven spots during the February Super Bowl at a cost of more than $21 million.
With an audience of nearly 100 million, advertising during the Super Bowl is money well spent.
New owners
at Gym City
Under new ownership, a Portland gym facility is offering new classes and equipment to Jay County residents.
Meadow and Taylor Wilson have acquired the 7-year-old facility.
Gym City, 1393 W. Tyson Road, is opening up new opportunities for people interesting in gymnastics, cheerleading and Tae Kwon Do.
Summer classes are being held now, but registration for August classes in gymnastics and cheerleading are open. The facility also hosts an open gym on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m.

Nursing award
A Portland nurse received a "nurse of the year" award from an area not-for-profit organization.
Amy Passmore, of Crowne Point in Union City, was honored with the Community Nurse of the Year award from State of the Heart Hospice, which serves western Ohio and eastern Indiana providing health care for people with life-limiting illnesses.
Passmore said her devotion to nursing came from years of seeing nurses interacting with her mother, who was often in and out of hospitals.
Garbage offer
The industry's leader in waste removal made an offer to acquire a major competitor this week.
Waste Management Inc. offered to purchase Republic Services Inc., the No. 3 larger waste management firm, in a deal that looks like an attempt to keep the No. 2 competitor at bay.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the $6.3 million offer is an effort to keep Republic from teaming up with second-largest Allied Waste Industries Inc.
Coke prices rising
Coca-Cola will be raising prices in the fall after taking a major profit smacking in the last quarter.
After a 23 percent drop in profits, the company is inching up price to cover increasing costs and lower demand.[[In-content Ad]]
