Appreciation day set in Dunkirk (05/24/06)

An Appreciation Day will be held Saturday for employees, past, present and retirees, of S.D.P. Manufacturing, Indiana Glass and Saint-Gobain Containers. The event will be held at Frank Merry Park in rural Dunkirk.
A fishing tournament will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. for adults and children and a horseshoe tournament begins at 10 a.m.
At 11 a.m. ceremonies will be held around the flag pole, followed by messages by park board president, Steven Storie; Saint-Gobain plant manager Joe Drago; Indiana Glass representative Jerry Rouse; and S.D.P. executive vice president, Dru Hall.
Lunch will be served, consisting of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, baked beans and soft drinks. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.
Kids games will be from 1 to 3 p.m., including a sandbox treasure hunt, sack races and more. Prizes will be given. An adult euchre tournament will begin at 4 p.m.
There will also be live music.
A $2 charge will be collected for all tournaments.
Fort FFA
Fort Recovery FFA agronomy judging team members Beth Fortkamp, Lindsey Fortkamp, Kevin Fullenkamp, Kevin Fullenkamp, Kevin Jutte, Kelly Knapke, Beth Lennartz, Beverly Lennartz, Greg Lennartz, Melanie Lennartz, Jenessa Nietfeld, Kelly Sudhoff and Britany Wendel recently competed in Columbus, Ohio, and placed fifth in the state.
Team member Beth Lennartz, daughter of Dave and Sue Lennartz, placed eighth individually.
The team had to identify weeds, seeds and insects and make fertilizer and herbicide recommendations.
They received a banner for their efforts.
Earn certification
Several Jay County High School juniors and seniors earned Worth Ethic Certification for the 2005-06 school year.
Students earned a certificate by demonstrating mastery of work-ready traits such as community service, respectfulness, self-discipline, punctuality, team work and commitment.
This year’s awardees represent the top seven percent of JCHS seniors and juniors and have completed 614 hours of community service, averaging 17 hours per student.
Juniors earning certificates were Heather Ayers, Amanda Barnett, Kelsey Bone, April Coleman, Caitlin Dunn, Sara Garringer, James Heare, Nathaniel Helm, and Ashley Horn.
Also, Megan Knittle, Brittany Lewis, Maria Miller, Steven Minnich, Jessica Muhlenkamp, Theresa Reinhart, Dane Rowles, Jared Shrack, Dustin Snyder, Lacey Thornburg, Shelly Turner, Benjamin Wellman, Carissa Wilkins, and Randy Wolford.
Seniors receiving certification were James Brosher, Micah Enyart, Claire Fennig, Travis Ford, Nathaniel Green, Robert Green, Dustin Habegger, Samantha Hilfiker, Alyssa Johnson, Amy Knapke, Chadrick Miller, Brenna Morrical, Douglas Murray, Rebecca Newman, and Abby Schmiesing.
Spanish competition
Several Jay County High School Spanish students recently competed in the annual state-wide Spanish competition at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, placing fifth as a school overall.
Megan Knittle received second place in the scrambled sentences category at the advanced level; Abby Schmiesing and Jared Shrack received fifth place in the conversation competition at the advanced level.
Weems inducted
Cynthia A. Weems, Bryant, was recently inducted into the Alpha Epsilon Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.
Weems, the daughter of David Pyle and Kayellen Ralph, is majoring in legal services/paralegal.[[In-content Ad]]
