Area residents earn degrees (6/28/05)

Area residents graduated from Vincennes University in April. Jaima Lynn Bonvillian, Redkey, earned a degree in family and consumer sciences/interior design option. Mitchell Paul Southworth, Salamonia, earned a degree in fire science and safety technology. Matthew Allen Flesher, Ridgeville, earned a degree in electronics technology/biomedical option.

Erin Marie Smith, Portland, recently graduated from Anderson University.

Adam D. Smith, Portland, recently earned a bachelor’s degree in computer aided drafting and design technology from Tri-State University in Angola.

Danielle Corwin recently received her degree of Doctor of Pharmacy from Ohio State University. She has accepted a pharmacist position at the VA Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the daughter of Martha and Robert Corwin and the granddaughter of Betty and George Noble and Mary Rose Corwin, of Portland.

Sarah Tyler Herstad recently graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where she was co-valedictorian of her class of 986 students. The daughter of David and Mercy Herstad, David is a 1971 graduate of Portland High School, she is also the grand-niece of Portland resident Maxine Starr. She plans to attend Stanford University in the fall.

Attends girls state

Amanda Hein of Fort Recovery attended the 2005 American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls State program held recently at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.

Buckeye Girls State is an Americanism program designed to educate the citizens of tomorrow in city, county and state government functions and operations.

Hein was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and held the position of Judge of Court of Common Pleas.

Scholarship pageant

The Miss Mid East Scholarship Pageant will be held July 23 and 24 at the Kokomo High School.

This is a preliminary pageant for the Miss America-Miss Indiana organization for girls ages 17 to 24 who live in or attend school in Adams, Blackford, Jay, Randolph, Wayne or Wells Counties.

Entrepreneur opportunity

The second annual Purdue University Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship’s “Opportunity for Indiana Business Plan Competition” is being held for those needing capital to start their own business.

Online registration is open for the regional competitions on Nov. 29 at IPFW and Nov. 30 and Purdue Research Park and Dec. 1 at Purdue North Central and Calumet. Each region will offer a total prize package of $50,000 and is funded by the Lilly Endowment.
