Area students earn honors (06/15/07)
Taking Note
Ball State University officials have named several students to the 2007 spring semester dean's list.
From Geneva was Kyle Armstrong, Margaret Beymer, Ashley Bollenbacher, and Casey Gentis.
Students from Jay County included: Jason Clutter, Adam Homan, Andrew Pinkerton, Brittany Pinkerton, and Vanessa Wilkins, Bryant; Brent Caldwell, Tammy Cook, Drake Hatch, Ryan Hornbaker, Byron O'Conner, Thomas Shrack, Lisa VanSkyock, and Ryan Wenger, Dunkirk.
Also, Erin Arnold, Kelli Budde, Jarred Corwin, Nicholas Ehrhart, Robert Green, Tyler Johnston, John Keller, Brandon May, Nathan McClung, Adrienne Rines, and Erich Zielinski, all of Portland; and Michael Hurt, Redkey.

The Vincennes University dean's list for spring 2007 includes students from the main campus in Vincennes plus extended instructional sites in Indianapolis at the Aviation Technology Center and the Indiana School for the Deaf.
Included on the list was Brandon M. McDavid, Portland, who is majoring in printing technology.

Stephanie M. Rines, Portland, has been named to the dean's list for spring semester 2007 at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

Anna Culy, 204 Oak St., Portland, was recently named to the dean's list at Taylor University. A graduate of Jay County High School, she is a senior majoring in history.
Wins scholarship
University of Indianapolis student Daniel Scott, Portland, is one of five recipients of $2,000 scholarships from the Indiana Broadcasters Association.
Scott is a senior at U-Indy, majoring in communication with an emphasis in electronic media. The son of Harry and Carolyn Scott, he is a 2004 graduate of Jay County High School.
This year the IBA awarded a total of $14,500 in scholarships to current college students and high school seniors. Scott was chosen from a pool of 69 applicants at colleges around the state for the 2007 awards.
Taylor graduate
Laci Liggett, a graduate of Jay County High School, graduated cum laude May 19, from Taylor University's Upland campus with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education.
Applications accepted
The Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series is seeking applicants from throughout Indiana for its 2007-08 class. The program is designed for Republican women who are interested in increasing their involvement in the public and political arenas.
Applicants should have demonstrated leadership skills in their field of work or community service. As many as 20 participants will be selected for the nine-month program which features monthly sessions with government and political leaders, lobbyists and media representatives.
Applications are due by Aug. 1, and are available by calling (317) 964-5037 or visiting the web site at www.lugarseries.org.
Special invite
The Jay County Historical Museum has extended a special invitation to local residents and out-of-town guests for the Portland High School Alumni Banquet to visit the museum which will be open special hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Along with the regular exhibits, featured this month is a display of sports memorabilia from the collection of local sports enthusiast, Les Eads. Also on display will be the scrapbooks of sports writer, Alex Wasmuth.
There is no charge to visit the museum at 903 E. Main St.
Claycomb graduates
Sixty-seven new massage therapists, including two Portland residents, graduated from the Alexandria School of Scientific Therapeutics on Sunday, June 10, during ceremonies at Ball State University.
Among the graduates were Wendy Marie Claycomb and Lauren Ashley Luebke, both of Portland.
The students completed a 10 1/2 month course of study at the school and qualified for membership in the American Massage Therapy Association.
Claycomb is currently employed at Inspirations Salon, Tanning and Gifts.
Deadline announced
The law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, Indianapolis, will be awarding a $2,000 Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership to an Indiana educator who has been accepted into and will attend an advanced degree program for education and administration in 2008.
This is the sixth year for the scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of the applicant's past academic and professional achievements, future goals, potential for leadership and financial need. Educators from all 92 counties in Indiana are invited to apply.
