One Jay County graduate has been handed the reigns of her team while a Patriot senior has just decided where he will continue his athletic career.
Ball State junior and 2002 JCHS graduate Abby Arnold was recently selected to captain the Cardinal women’s swim team next season. Also this week, Ben Freeman signed to play football next year at Ohio Northern University.
Arnold, who red-shirted the 2003-04 season because of an injury, was a member of the Ball State 200-meter freestyle relay team which finished seventh at the Mid-American Conference Championships this season. She will be the No. 2 returning freestyle swimmer on the team and will rank among the top 10 in the MAC.
She was a four-year letter winner in swimming at Jay County and earned All-Olympic Athletic Conference honors in all four seasons. She holds school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and is a member of all three school-record relay teams.
Freeman was a starter at linebacker in each of his four seasons with the Patriot football team and was a team leader in tackles. He also saw time on the offensive side of the ball at tight end and fullback, and was a kicker and punter.
He will play linebacker at Ohio Northern, located in Ada, Ohio. The Polar Bears were ranked as highly as 15th nationally last season in Division III and finished 8-2.
Carrie Nichols
A graduate of South Adams, she was key to a couple of walk-off wins Monday for the University of St. Francis over Tri-State. The team trailed in both games, but rallied for a 5-4 victory in the opener and then left the heroics to Nichols in game two.
With the Cougars trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning they managed to get a pair of runners on for Nichols. She responded with a three-run, walk-off home run to left-center field. She finished 4-for-4 in the contest.
Kerri McClung
The Jay County graduate gave the Bowling Green women’s track team a first-place finish for the second straight week as the Falcons placed third at the All Ohio Championships April 16 behind Akron and Ohio State.
McClung out-distanced Cincinnati’s Jo Young for the second time in three weeks for the shot put title, winning by more than two feet with a toss of 50 feet even. She also defeated Young for the shot put win at UC’s Oliver Nikoloff Invitational April 2.
She added a ninth-place finish for Bowling Green in the hammer throw at 160 feet, five inches.
