Art exhibition scheduled (9/24/03)
Taking Note
Artists from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky will exhibit their work during the Harvest Biennial 2003 Regional Juried Exhibition in the Hugh N. Ronald Gallery at Arts Place, Inc., beginning Saturday, Oct. 4, with an opening reception at 6 p.m. followed by an awards presentation at 6:30 p.m.
Betty Grae Fishman, executive director of Artlink, Inc., Fort Wayne, will be the juror. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
FUNK FEST
Funk Fest, an antique show and more, will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 and Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Jay County Fairgrounds.
Activities on Saturday include:
• Car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with D.J. by Hypnotizing Sounds.
• Macramé class, noon to 1 p.m.
• Riley Rabbit’s Comedy Caravan, 2-2:30 p.m.
• Kids’ Games from 3-4 p.m.
• Riley Rabbit’s Comedy Caravan, 4-4:30 p.m.
• Sock hop, 5-8 p.m.
Sunday’s activities include:
• Spam carving judging from 11 a.m. to noon.
• Retro road show, noon to 3 p.m.
• Hula hoop-off, 1-2 p.m.
• Eight-track tape throw, 2-3 p.m.
• Funkiest family/kid judging, 3-4 p.m.
Admission is $1. Kids 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.
FORT FFA
The Fort Recovery FFA Agronomy Judging Team and Poultry Judging Team placed second and fourth respectively in West Springfield, Mass., at the Eastern States Exposition and Livestock Show, or the Big E Contest.
The agronomy team identified weeds, seeds and insects, made fertilizer and herbicide recommendations, identified crop and vegetable diseases, and classified different soil and forage types. Members who competed were: Beth Fortkamp, Beth Lennartz, Jackie Lennartz, and Greg Reinhard.
The poultry team graded interior and exterior egg quality, graded chicken and turkey carcasses, judged broilers and layers, and took an exam over the poultry industry. Members competing were Greg Brackman, Kyle Fortkamp, Jennifer Link, and Mary Will. Will placed third individually.
GENEALOGY MEETING
The Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Mercer County Courthouse, Celina, Ohio. The door on Livingston Street will open at 1:30 p.m.
Mercer County recorder Tammy Barger will present a program explaining the recorder’s office and how to search for land and deed information. Following the presentation, a tour will be given by Kip Wright.
WORKSHOP
A Wetlands Workshop will be presented by the Department of Natural Resources in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Oct. 1, beginning at 8:15 a.m. at the Fort Harrison State Park in the Natural Resources Education Center. The program will conclude at 4:30 p.m.
Cost is $10 per person and includes lunch and snacks. Registration is required by Friday, Sept. 26 and is non-refundable.

CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENT
The 14th annual Blackford County Civil War Days will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 and Sunday, Oct. 12, in Hartford City.
Living battles, music, demonstrations, women’s fashion show and tea, food vendors, wagon rides, a military ball, Abraham Lincoln/Uncle Tom’s Cabin, sutlers, artillery night firing, a saloon and jail and more will be available for visitors to enjoy.
On Friday, Oct. 10, is a Student Discovery Day for students and teachers only.
