Arts Place to begin new classes (10/26/06)

Arts Place in Portland is accepting registrations for fall and winter innovations art and wellness classes.
Innovations classes to be offered include yoga, belly dancing, portfolio plus, oil painting, after school arts and ceramic mix.
Registration forms are available at Arts Place at 131 E. Walnut Street. For more information, call Arts Place at (260) 726-4809.

Artist Sonja Brooks will hold workshops at East Jay Middle School and West Jay Middle School as part of a residency program presented by Arts Place.
Students from Jan Hurst's and Leslie Newton's art classes will participate in workshops on altered books. This form of art has students change a book into a piece of mixed media art.
The workshops will take place Nov. 13 through 17.

Arts Place recently chose new board members for 2006-07. Peter Minnich was elected president. Minnich is from Berne and is owner of Edelweiss Floral and Gifts.
Other officers elected were James Forcum, first vice president from Hartford City; Margie Jetter, second vice president from Portland; Elaine Broering, treasurer from St. Henry, Ohio; and Rob Weaver, secretary from Portland.
Directors re-elected were Elaine Broering, Margie Jetter and Connie Roberts, Portland. New directors chosen were Sara Farris, Portland; and Dagmar Oliver, Celina, Ohio. They will all serve through 2009. Peter Minnich was elected and his term will end in 2008.
Other current board members are Andrew Briggs, Geneva; Charles Hein, Fort Recovery; Doug Loy, Becky Hinkle, Patrick Miller, Shauna Runkle and Gretchen Young, all of Portland.
Library events
A Halloween story time will be held Friday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at Fort Recovery Public Library.

Fort Recovery Chief of Police Jared Laux will speak on Identify Theft: Could It Happen to You? on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. at Fort Recovery Public Library.

Friends of the Library will sponsor a book fair on Sunday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
To speak at JCHS
Dr. Margaret Meeker, a nationally known pediatrician and author, will speak about the growing epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases among teens. Meeker has spent the past twenty years practicing pediatric and adolescent medicine and counseling teens and parents and has spoken on radio and television programs, including Dr. Laura, The 700 Club and The O'Reily Factor.
Meeker will speak Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Jay County High School auditorium at 7 p.m. and then will address JCHS, East Jay and West Jay Middle School students at JCHS on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the high school gymnasium.
