Asbury holding babysitting classes (06/01/07)
Taking Note
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a babysitting class on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland.
The class is for youth ages 11 to 15 and will teach holding, feeding and dressing of infants and children, safety and safe play and first aid.
The cost is $25 and each participant will be given a Red Cross Babysitter's Training Handbook and Babysitting Bag containing a first aid kit and other items. To register, call (800) 480-4403 or (260) 726-9530.

The Red Cross will also offer an Introduction to Disaster course and New Volunteer Orientation on Wednesday at Jay County Public Library in Portland. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. and will teach CPR and first aid

Achievement award
Robert Green, a freshman at Ball State University, received the Academic Achievement of the Year award at Schmidt/Wilson Hall.
Green obtained a 4.0 grade point average. He also tutored several students, at no charge, on his floor.
Scholarships available
The Portland Foundation is accepting applications for five different scholarships.
One is for a student attending John Jay Center for Learning; one is for a full-time college junior or senior, preferably in Penn Township; one is for a student seeking a doctoral degree in a medical field; one is for a student pursuing a degree in architecture, history or education; one is for women interested in pursuing their education or a female GED graduate.
